Arakawa Under the Bridge #05 — Ms. Tomato Head
May 2nd, 2010
Needs more explosives and martial artists.
Impressions:
After Stella and Maria, the clumsy gardener P-ko was just a letdown in every way. She’s clumsy… she gardens… and that’s about it. At least they mixed up a lot of the musical direction this week from usual. The new OP is obvious, but Shaft also made minimal use of that irritating guitar riff that they’ve been using at the start of most segments. On the other hand, it felt like they somehow managed to increase the number of closeups on Kou’s eye this week. I wasn’t sure that was possible, but Shinbo somehow managed to find a way.
The last little bit about Kou being a bum was also not very good and dragged on for far longer than it had any business doing. The whole thing felt artificially stretched out just for the sake of the ‘cliffhanger’ of Star-For-Brains and Kou going Dueling Banjos next week. So not as good as last week’s by a long shot, but at least it started with Maria and ended with Maria. This show has done worse.

Maria’s bouncing derriere as she sashays across the screen. Yes, this show has had worse ways to start – hell, most SHAFT shows have had worse starts than this.
At least P-Ko’s cute…
