Working!! #02 — Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

April 11th, 2010

This show certainly tries to get by without wasting a single joke.

Impressions:

Since this episode contrived to be significantly worse than the first, I’m really not wild about giving it a third shot. The problem this time was Inami, who is just a horrible horrible character in every sense of the word. Her cliched inability to get within five feet of a man without physically assaulting them stretches well past the limits of believability, even for a slapstick series like this, especially when it outwardly purports to be grounded in reality. I’m all for reasonable suspension of belief, but not to the point where I have to accept that a seventeen year old waitress has panic attacks from being in the same room as men. How has she not bee fired yet? Or more likely, arrested for assault?

They also once again spent about 90% of the show repeating the same jokes over and over again. Poplar calls Takanashi the wrong name, that’s so silly. Inami is surprised by Takanashi and punches him, that’s so silly. Poplar is small, that’s so silly. Whose-her-face has a sword and a crush on the manager, that’s so silly. Those were the four jokes of the episode. I hope you like them. At least the OP was kind of nice, even if it’s pretty clear that the style was lifted completely wholesale from Azumanga. At least they chose to swipe from something good.

Sword girl gets an episode.

6 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Jack Damn says:

My feeling is that this is one of those shows that has a beginning steeped in banality, but ends up being something like Gundam.

    • Aroduc says:

Takanashi will be killed, then come back in an opera mask and pilot Mecha-DarkPoplar?

      • Joule says:

Have you ever considered a future in directing 4koma slice of life manga into mecha space operas? It sounds like you have the chops.

I think I’m mostly watching for the Asumi Kana typecasting but maybe it’ll get better as we go along like Hyakko.

  • Albedo says:

I likes me the violent man-fearing chick. Violence + Moe = SUPAH MOE!!!!

seriously though, this show is cute and silly. I’m certainly not watching it for any reason other than the characters. Who doesn’t love a bunch of weirdos interacting with each other for the amusement of others?

  • hornblower says:

Albedo, you are a freaking weirdo to be sure. Of course, that’s to be expected of anyone who likes this terrible show.
