Night Raid #03 — Evil Midnight Bomber

April 19th, 2010

…What bombs at midnight! Yeah, baby!

Impressions:

Well, this episode was a lot more action packed and enjoyable than the last few, but was still full of all sorts of burning questions about the writing, mostly the question of how terrible the teleporting bomber’s plans were. He wants Yukina off to her brother… that’s fine. Cliche, but fine. About there is where the intelligence of the writing runs out. To begin with, the random little girl showing up anoyed me the whole episode. She was just… there, and apparently her only purpose was some foreshadowing at the end when she got mindwiped by ol’ ruffly-hair. That’s it. They stuck a 5 year old in the middle of a deserted building just for that. They really couldn’t think up a better way to handle that?

Even setting aside the fact that the teleporters here see about a quarter as intelligent as ZKC’s Aoi, the whole bombing thing makes absolutely no sense. He’s a teleporter. Set the bombs for 30 seconds. Teleport in, drop it anywhere teleport out. Boom. The teleporters also seem to be able to teleport other objects at least hundred of yards away and into other objects, so of course, when they’re trying to kill each other, the best plan is to teleport up close to give yourself an opening, and then punch the other guy. The bombs also apparently had nothing stopping anybody from picking them up, running with them, and then telekinetically blasting them a few times which begs the question of why they didn’t just smash the damn things. Yukina also seems to be picking up random extra psychometric powers as the plot requires in order to keep her useful. The pen thing at the end was also terrible. The best attack was a surprise attack from the front? You didn’t have a pen in your own pocket? Or couldn’t just psychic blast the guy’s hand while his back was turned? Sheesh.

Regardless of my complaints though, this was easily the most fun episode of this show to date. Sure, the physics and powers made absolutely no sense within the context of the show, but at least we’re getting espers fighting espers and some form of plot.
