HEROMAN #02 — Magical Girl Cockroach

April 8th, 2010

Nice wands, you fruity insects.

Impressions:

Just popping in to quickly note that the animation somehow managed to get even less impressive this week despite fighting against the cockroaches for the first time and the corniness was ramped up even higher. Heroman punches one of the cockroaches, and it explodes into a shower of green goo which immediately vanishes into thin air, and then strikes a pose. I can already see the toy line. It also feels a bit weird for them to go in the direction of revealing Joey as the power behind Heroman to everybody so quickly, especially with the terrible terrible "You’re a hero too!" moment from Rina and the jocks glaring from the bushes. Yeah, Joey was great. He… ran up next to Heroman and stood there. Wow. What an amazing guy.

I also want to know how and why the jocks and cheerleader were even the only ones there. Three aliens walk through a city, leaving a bloody swathe of destruction, and a bunch of teenagers are the only ones who follow? Or hell, three 12 foot tall aliens descend from space, smash a few cars, and then the police walk up and yell at them for filming a movie? Or even the alien’s plan. "We want to learn about you, therefore we’re going to take… oh… I don’t know… the three closest people… that should be enough… and then destroy the planet." Come on, Bones. Even the Skrulls had better plans than that. I’m sort of interested in seeing how the invasion pans out and why they chose to reveal Joey so early, but not really that interested, and the writing so far hasn’t lead me to believe that they’d be going anywhere intelligent with it. So long as there’s nothing to fight but endless waves of cockroach grunts that can’t even hurt him, despite having froofy magic wands to wave around, there’s really no drama to any of it.

I should also mention that I did watch the second episode of Koihime last night. It was… not pleasant. I’ve noticed that Zhang Fei always sucks. It doesn’t matter what adaptation it is, Dynasty Warriors, Ikkitousen, Koihime… anything. Zhang Fei is always a pox upon it. Annnnnnd the episode was mostly about the loli brigade of Chouhi, Batai, and Shuri getting into mischief with Hinari. It was even less interesting than I’m making it out to be.

Preview:

More cockroaches invade.

  • Phocus says:

…Nonetheless, I’m having fun watching this series.

Maybe it’s because of the somewhat familiar setting and plot of a Stan Lee comic. And this series needs a dub now.

  • Pozzy says:

yea im with phocus. its rather cliche and obviously stan lee, but its still enjoyable.

honestly im probably just being lured cause of BONES though. I just KNOW they are going to animate some amazing fight scenes up ahead. I’ll be angry if they dont though.

**dont let me down BONES… stan lee can go back in his cave.

  • Myssa Rei says:

Re Koihime Musou: You don’t watch it for historical accuracy or great characterization. You watch it for the mindless slapstick.

  • Sam says:

I’d watch a show about magical girl cockroaches in an instant.
