Shakugan no Shana S #02 — Helicopter Maid

February 26th, 2010

JCStaff has really got this time wasting thing down pat, haven’t they?

Impressions:

While the first special at least tried for some humor with its body shuffling antics, this just has… pretty much nothing. I’m not even really sure what they’re trying to do wih these OVAs… aside from keep the series on life support. The selling point of the Shanaverse is not that it is a touching slice of life about a girl and her insecure maid, so a four month gap just to see Wilhelmina hover anxiously around Shana for 30 minutes is tedious at best. Couldn’t they have thrown in some random training? Or had Yuuji or Margery actually try to physically distract Wilhelmina? That would have been nothing but an improvement. Hell, 30 minutes of watching Margery get progressively more drunk would have been more amusing.

At least the series still looks rather good, even if for some inexplicable reason, the only thing they decided to put any effort into animating was Tanaka’s literally time-filling rantings and ravings. How about some dynamic cooking instead of a montage? Or a spontaneous cat fight in the kitchen? I’m starting to think that JCStaff has eaten all its action staff after… um… Slayers? Was that really the last action show they did? Yeesh. Of course, given the way this series is going, that probably means that the next episode will have some kind of unrestricted spell that forces Yuuji to go on a picnic.

there are still no full video of this episode, i really want to watch it

  • Aww, this looks pretty boring. They really could have thrown a bit more action into these OVAs.

  • Myssa Rei says:

These are supposed to be the unanimated chapters from the light novels, folks. A lot of the stuff in the books were glossed over by the first two seasons, or outright skipped, like the ReShuffle chapter.

    • Aroduc says:

The knowledge that they were lame enough to skip doesn’t make them worth bringing back later though. Kudos for the first series on skipping this stuff I suppose, but that doesn’t make swallowing it now any better.

Have u even read the novels???? This is an adaptation of Shakugan no Shana S Novels wich are side stories … Nothing to go with d main story … Don’t make up things :D :D :D

  • yuyu says:

action action action, thats all you boys ever want XD

    • Myssa Rei says:

I think it’s due to how the Shana franchise was adapted for TV. The novels, for example, are easily 50% LoveCom and 50% Action, but the anime trimmed many of the lovecom/non-action chapters out.

  • Man0warr says:

These OVA are just adaptions of the sidestories, not sure what you think they are supposed to be.

I don’t think there is enough main story novel content to animate yet – but they wanted to keep the brand in front of the viewer while they wait.

  • Mason says:

I’d love to read the novels, but the english release of Shana novels not only suck, but only 2 volumes were released 3 years ago and then stopped. Fucking Viz. Wish Shana would be re-licensed and get similar treatment to Haruhi or something…

Maybe i could try learning Japanese and import the books directly from Japan…but that’d take several years of learning and practice if i want to actually be able to read Japanese books and fully understand it the way Japanese people themselves do.

This would have been worth all the boredom if Wilhemina had taken one bite, deadpanned “mazui”, had an exaggerated horror-manga reaction, and keeled over.
