Hekiyoh’s Student Council #11 — Sick Day

A day without Ken? Say it isn’t so!

Impressions:

Most of this episode was pretty boring, but the last 3 seconds or so… there’s a lot to talk about there. Mafuyu confessed that she likes Ken in front of everybody. There’s a rather lot to say about that, for a number of reasons, and I really wish this show was going on longer because even while the drama is always shoehorned in and somewhat out of place, they’ve been mostly doing a pretty decent job using it to round out the characters instead of drag them down. I’d be very interested in seeing how the dynamic of the group, or just for Ken himself, would change if he actually started going out with one of them, or just how he responds to her next week. For all his claims of being a pervert, and ranting and raving, Ken’s one of the few anime characters that I can think of who would actually be able to carry on a relationship like a normal human being instead of giant fireworks and wedding bells the moment someone confesses that they like them. I’d still rather see pure comedy from the series, but I have to admit that outside of the mood whiplash, it’s been surprisingly adept at drama too. Although given its competition in that field, it’s not hard to excel.

All that said, this episode was rather dull otherwise. Ken was out sick, so the rest of the group just sort of putzed around. They talked about jobs through the first half, and then once they realized that they had to do the work that Ken normally does, somehow ended up exploring his magic murder bag, filled with all kinds of odds and ends. After that, it was back to drama and a very random couple of guys trying to hit on them who knew all about Ken and had no problems talking crap about him until Mafuyu of all people snapped and belted them. There was also the flashback at the start and towards the end of Mafuyu building an igloo to shelter a depressed Ken without him even realizing it. I really am interested in where all these "Depressed Ken" moments have come from lately, but who knows what the ending is actually going to cover.

While Ken in a relationship would certainly change up the dynamics, what does it mean for the harem end!?

Plus, Mafuyu? Sure she’s better than Kurimu but she’s still low tier. Go with Minatsu.

    • Rawr says:

Generic Tsundere tomboy tier is generic. Mafuyu is Creepy Fujoshi loli omfg kawaii tier. Is there even a need to compare the two? The superior one is readily apparent to anyone who actually watches the freaking show. Still Chizuru is loev. Mokyuu tier > all.

  • Gin says:

*sing* Nothing but…feelings *cough* I’m off today.
Wow…those two guys really were random. I mean, look at their design. How generic were they?

    • Gin says:

Oh, that reminds me. Does anyone know what Ken was being made fun of for by the two boys? I have an idea, but I really don’t think its the right one.

  • DoubleA says:

One down three more to go :)

  • Haesslich says:

Anonymous: If he’s going harem end, going with a Shiina sister might mean tripping flags for BOTH sisters and a semi-harem ending.

As for the depressed Ken, I’ve read around the net that this is based on some issues Ken has dating back to Junior High… which again seems to tie back to Ep 9’s ‘mental classroom’ scene between him and Chizuru who apparently had a similar trauma.

  • Nanaya says:

I wouldn’t be suprised if Ken’s entire personality that we’ve seen until now was just a mask, and he is actually completely different. In that case, the “him” until now would just be a personality he took on because he thought it would be happier or something.

    • Nanaya says:

Err… somehow I forgot to type the last line there:

If my prediction is right (guessing by anime drama standards), you can expect at least 1 episode (probably the finale) that leads up to a “we like you as you are even if it’s fake/becoming the mask” scene. *Throws his money into the circle*

That or they’re randomly doing scenes like this to screw with people who overthink their implications.

  • rufe says:

This episode seems to explain a lot of the “depressed ken” stuff. Those two guys said that he was two-timing a childhood friend and his stepsister and felt very guilty about it?? (doesn’t make a whole lot of sense…)

  • Zel says:

As for the depressed Ken scenes, there’s another one with Minatsu when she is intends to move away with her mom (after Minatsu leaves by herself and Mafuyu stays to explain their situation to the others), in which Ken had asked her how to become like her.

There might have been one with Kurimu too.

By the way, Mafuyu doesn’t build the “igloo”, it was already there to begin with, most likely part of the park.

  • Fate says:

    NOOO!!!!! GO FOR MINATSU!!!!!

As I have said before though this show ends with a “harem ending” that is really all of them just proclaiming their friendship. I guarantee it.

  • iRathiest says:

Is this yet another 12 episode anime? If so, the producers can go die unless they continue it for, like, 26 or so.

For those who disagree, your argument is invalid. Why? I don’t know either.

Chizuru is the closest to Ken, though, with both of them helping each other somewhat through trauma. Mafuyu’s confession caught me off guard, but it was kind of obvious in the Chizuru-Ken episode that all the girls like Ken to some extent.

  • Gotank says:

Did anyone notice the distinct similarity between the OST in about 10:00 of this episode and Tori no Uta of Air? Melody to chord progression, they seemed very similar to me…
