Let the Saturday OVAs begin. Today we have Mahoromatic and Hidamari Sketch. Next week, Shana.

Impressions:

I honestly expected this to be a bit better than it was. I was especially tired of clutzy Minawa jokes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when, and then having to suffer through the exact same joke almost a decade later four or five times in one episode has only cemented my hatred for her. This was also a lot more fanservice-heavy than I remember the series being. Yes, I remember Shikijou’s violently undulating breasts and Mahoro climbing into the bath with Suguru, but 95% of this episode was centered around the girls wanting to play maid dress up, followed by naked time, followed by underwear time. It’s not like I was expecting Mahoro to gunfight a giant crab for most of the episode, but I didn’t expect it to be so gratuitous either.

I’m actually somewhat surprised that they stuck to the ol’ low quality/washed out colors from the original. Times have changed, not everything needs to look like it’s been lightly bleached. It was animated pretty well and the fight at the end was certainly enjoyable. I’d have been even happier with it if they had spent less time working on Minawa tripping and used that money to blow up some more robots. At least next week should begin with Mahoro kicking some ass before apparently seguing into generic school festival #214 and more maidservice. I really could not care less about "mysterious vaguely evil shota" (man, if they actually mentioned Feldrance, maybe I would have remembered him) either. God only knows why they acted all cagey about him.
