Hekiyoh’s Student Council #05 — Canon in DDs

Poor Ken never gets a break.

Impressions:

Another great episode all around. I was especially happy with how good of a job did anthropomorphizing the Ken-Locker through the second half. Even without his poses and the gleam in his eye, they still managed to convey the same brand of his reckless energy through a big metal box. The art did suffer more than a few times through the episode though. There were quite a few shots where people’s faces were just a little bit off and at least one where it looks like Mafuyu’s missing her arm. You’d think that getting to not draw Ken for half the episode would leave Deen with a little budget to spare to correct that, but they probably blew it on all the sparkly shots of the girls in their bikinis.

I also must note that Minatsu with her hair down looks suspiciously like I’d imagine a female version of Ken. She’s also delving into brainwashing business alongside Chizuru, although she did bring her own doom upon herself. Mafuyu’s starting to get under Ken’s skin too, as his fevered fantasies about the girls eventually led him into one of Mafuyu’s daydreams about him. Otherwise though, this week was pretty light on the parodies. Just lots of girls in swimsuits and Ken freaking out about not getting to see them. I’m also weak against the Canon in D, overused as it is, but it still gives me warm fuzzies inside whenever a show uses it.

And just for the record, I have to give Mafuyu the highest marks of the group for her taste in swimwear.

Brief Summary:

It’s summer. It’s hot. So the girls decide to hang out in swimsuits to cool off while blindfolding Ken. He’s less than happy about it and continuously rants/fantasizes until Minatsu brainwashes Mafuyu into believing that Ken is the enemy. That quickly backfires when a thrown protractor cuts Ken’s blindfold off. After that, Minatsu goes to play baseball and Ken gets locked in a locker for the rest of the day. The rest of the girls chit chat about making friends at school and whatnot until running off to the pool. Ken uses his imagination to power his escape (they unlocked it on the way out anyway), but as soon as he leaves the room, he runs into a beautiful girl. He’s totally dumbstruck by her, and she seems to know and be comfortable around him. It’s Minatsu with her hair down. Ken can’t believe how different she is right now. Just as he ruins their romantic moment by asking if one of the secrets she still has from him is that she’s really a man, Sakurano comes back in and (after being called a loli) shoos Ken back into his locker where he’s forgotten until well after school ends.

6 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

this show is light hearted romantic comedy at its best, normally i dont watch these kind of shows I’m actually finding i like this. I usually never watch anything that doesnt have regular explosions and whatnot.

Like WE’D imagine. I was kind of shocked, because we both reached that same conclusion at the same time.

Also, this Minatsu delivered quite the critical blow on me. I did like her being all flustered over Ken finding out about her cosplay in the first episode, and I was sad because she was never given the spotlight again. But still, after realizing that she looks like a female Ken would look I’m kind of mindfucked.

    QFT.

Sometimes it scares me how we reach the same conclusions. At the same time, even.

    Again, QFFT.

    Who remembered and unlocked him?

^ I don’t know if it’s just obscured in that one screencap or purposefully hidden for the entire scene, but if it’s the latter it seems like it might be important somehow.

    • Nanaya says:

Ah, nevermind, the teacher (I think she’s that teacher) was the one who found him. Heh, so none of them even remembered him. I’m starting to think this series might end with him in his delusional corner with them walking away from him.

I have to stop enjoying this show as much as I do.

Also, ditto on the Minatsu:Female Ken connection.

  • Haesslich says:

Ah, what an image to put into people’s heads. Minatsu looks like a female Ken, which may make her immune to his charms because it’d be like watching a guy with his genderswapped self…

Who wants to say the obvious response?
