Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei #08 — “I AM YOUR FATHER”

August 23rd, 2009

Now there’s a lasting image.

I’m not late. I’m 2 hours early for the rerun.

Impressions:

Gee, have I noted Shaft’s massive reuse of footage and cheap techniques this season?

Not exactly the strongest episode of the season. We pick up right where we left off last episode, complete with a little under a minute of repeating the introduction to the whole ‘unexpected surprise’ spiel, just for them to continue that to its conclusion for another 3 minutes. Nothing says awesome like a 6 minute segment with a week’s break in between. Part 2 was a bit more interesting and focused on people’s images in various ways, mostly how they train themselves in various ways to display the proper image of themselves.

For the first time in the season, they finally putzed around with the art style of a sequence. I’m not sure what I’d call it though. It was pretty much the same paper cutouts as they’ve used for the OPs at various ponts. It does lead me to believe that the art budget ran out and they had the VAs draw the episode. The content wasn’t really interesting either, and I feel like I’m missing something culturally, or maybe they did spend this segment on the terrifyng horror of mystery train destinatons.

It’s also interesting to me that the VAs have stopped trying to draw anything that looks even vaguely like Itoshiki. Maybe they’re as tired of that sequence as I am.

‘complete with a little under a minute of repeating the introduction to the whole ‘unexpected surprise’ spiel,…’

… I think you meant ‘a little under 15 seconds’. Aside from the opening summary (which i always skip over when reading the manga), OP/ED, and ekaki uta segments, there was a grand total of 12 seconds of reused footage. I can’t tell any more whether these are really your impressions or if this is all part of your plan to win the “Snarkiest Anime Blog” award.

I quite enjoyed the paper doll segment (both content and style). I don’t know much about art techniques, but even if the segment cost less, the handdrawn dolls look like a LOT more effort than the standard simple backgrounds + computer coloring/shading. It can’t have cost THAT much less money either… we’re not talking KareKano levels here.

Content-wise, it was about people who pretend to waffle over decisions but who’ve already made up their mind. Nice moment there where Kafuka asks if Zetsubou’s decided on a girl yet and he blushes at her and says yes… and then they take the “we’ll figure it out later train” with NEETs and politicians.

Aside from the synopsis/ekaki segments, one of the strongest episodes in all seasons of SZS, imo…

*shrug* Alright. A bit more involved of a metaphor than usual. I didn’t quite get the whole unavoidable destination while still wondering where the trains were going, so danke. Was probably concentrating a bit too much on the weird art.

I actually found that last segment to be totally tearjerkingly beautiful.
