Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei #02 — Let’s Do the Time Warp Again, Again
July 11th, 2009
What is it with today and chronological irregularities?
Impressions:
Mostly a pretty fun episode, although now that they seem bound and determined to use the Chiri punctuation beeps all the time, I’m going to have to drive a pencil into my skull. Oh well, it was a decent life. Part 1 was about being the best at something (not always important or relevant things), so they got to throw in the references absolutely constantly. Everything from the king of pop to the queen of Im@s showed up. Part 2 was about time lags, or pretty much delayed reactions/conclusions to things. The final part was more or less a free form continuation of the travel stuff. They made fun of Kaere’s English, Chiri turned wordplay into a psychological terror game, and then Kafuka drove Nozomu to despair by getting the bus ‘family’ to confess their sins. Nozomu escaped and then discovered that he had been replaced by some guy in a mask.
All three parts this week were pretty good, but I’m going to go ahead and go with the last one as my favorite, even if it lacked a particularly cohesive theme. Chiri’s no nonsense approach to Shiratori was especially funny to watch. Most of the time lag stuff was okay, but the joke already exists as double takes, and they didn’t really expand too far beyond that. The first part was just a little overly obsessed with tossing out cameos every single frame. Still amusing, but after a while, I feel like it could be more fun to try to name everything they throw up on the screen than pay attention to the gags. The "Draw Zetsubou Sensei" portions are also getting further and further off the mark. I wonder if they started with the decent artists in the VA cast on purpose… and what they’re going to do when it’s Meru’s turn.
