New Season Disclaimer:

I try to watch at least the first episode of every new show in a season. However, do not expect anything I say to be fair or balanced. I value my own entertainment above all else and there are some genres or methods of presentation that I just plain do not like and I’m not going to pretend otherwise. I’ll attempt to at least make a cursory explaination of what did and did not please me about each show, but it’s just a simple fact of life that my tastes are mine alone. Feel free to express your own opinions in the comments, just keep it under control. This is just television after all.

Actually, this aired online on the Bandai Channel a few days ago, but since it was given a different title than the other pre-airing special that a terrestrial broadcast and the Bandai channel are showing I figured this was just cast interviews and such. Oopsies. How many pre-airing specials does one show even need? Apparently two.

Impressions:

I’m not really certain why this is episode 00, since it dumps us into the story in progress with no real introduction to any of the characters and just a quickly tossed out "modern magic uses computers, classical magic uses your body" as the introduction to the entire magical ecosystem of the show, which could have been okay. A light touch is perfectly fine. Girls use magic. Koyomi sucks at it and turns everything into wash basins. Yumiko tries various things to train her up in classical magic to make her stop sucking. Unfortunately, Koyomi turning things into wash basins and being incompetent only gets you so far, and in this case, that’s only about a quarter of the distance required to reach a decent joke.

I think I’m actually going to just cut it off there. I still plan on watching the real introduction episode (and maybe even the second pre-airing special tomorrow on BS-11) and I’m hoping that’ll contain a bit more of death mage avenger Yumiko and fewer basins, or at the very least, better jokes with them, but I’d be lying if I said I was particularly looking forward to it after this. It also on Saturdays where competition is fierce, so I wouldn’t really hold my breath.
