Warring Era BASARA #02 — Spectacular Spiderhorse
April 8th, 2009
Spins a web, catches hay.
Guess who got tired of waiting for a decent raw.
Impressions:
Well, it wasn’t as awesome as the first episode, but there was still plenty of fun and over the top zaniness to be had. I blame Kasuga for the lameness personally. Every scene she was in just dragged on. For being easy on the eyes, she doesn’t really do much of anything but sit there and give lengthy exposition. Although, apparently she orgasms when Kenshin touches her. Most of the rest of the episode was cleaning house of the lesser warlords. Shingen took out the Houjo clan, complete with nameless ninja spazzing out against his axe, while Masamune tried to take out disco king Yoshimoto, but Yukimura got in the way and we got an introduction to Nobunaga’s gang instead. I do wish their introduction had been a little better. Mori peppering the forest with arrows was the only one that actually seemed menacing. Both Akechi and Nouhime used traps to take out their Yoshimoto decoys.
The art took quite a bit of a hit this episode during the action scenes. Shots like this don’t look good as stills or in motion. I’ve always hated when they make a drastic artistic shift just to make a scene feel more dynamic, but for the most part here, it was just a dramatic shift to terrible art to show Yukimura and Masamune grunting. Yoshimoto got some bad art time too. If it was a consistent style, that’s one thing, but given that Shingen’s fight had absolutely none of that nonsense going on until Houjo called upon the spirits of his ancestors.
Shingen’s gravity defying horses were also too awesome. It’s a shame they were decapitated. We’ll miss you, spiderhorses.
Preview:
More orgasming ninjas.

A pity that Date Masamune sounds so much like Kamina, but isn’t. It would have added extra GAR to the show on top of what makes it already awesome.
