Pandora Hearts #01 — Clocks BAD!

Suitcases good!
New Season Disclaimer:
I prefer to give every show a chance. You never know when your dream-eating insect Mai HiME knockoff will turn out to be a psychological romantic thriller, or the strange moeblob show will be full of wit and urine jokes. However, my preferences are still my preferences, and while I’ll endevor to at least convey what exactly I do or do not like, there are genres of shows that I just plain don’t particularly enjoy. My opinions are based on nothing more than a gut reaction to what I watched literally 10-15 minutes prior and should be construed as nothing more and nothing less than that.
Impressions:
Well, let’s get Xebec’s Xebecness out of the way. The production ranges from bad to worse with the occasional stopover in abysmal. The music is nothing to write home about either. The bad art really hurt things pretty severely when the thriller part started. Did the girl actually turn into wood like the dolls, or are they just bad at shading? It could be either. Who knows?
Almost the entire episode was Oz, his sister, and their crazy boyservant Gilbert just running around his estate, which was slightly less interesting than you might think. It was slow paced, and we were absolutely bludgeoned over the head with Oz’s spoiled nature so many times that I feel bruised. Besides, the thriller part was the only possibly interesting bit of the entire episode, and it was over in about two minutes. Gilbert turning evil might have been more interesting if he didn’t look like a soulless serial killer from the very begininng. The only thing that changed was that he started smiling.
So a very resounding bleh from me. Poor production, glacial pacing, and stilted writing. Maybe after a fifth of vodka… and some absinthe… and perhaps some LSD…

I actually quite liked it and while some of the animation was jerky at times, wasn’t horrid. But maybe I’m just unobservant? And the part with the shading was indeed supposed to look like that, it did in the manga as well (but with much better results).
