A Certain Magical Index #23 — Blue Sparklies Ending
March 12th, 2009
What the hell in this show is made of blue sparklies?
Impressions:
I really hate to ever use the phrase "so bad that it was good," but there were some moments in this episode that were just so amazingly terrible that I was cracking up. The important thing is that I was laughing at the show, not with it. To start, when Touma charged the golem to slide under it, they zoomed in on every single person’s face in the area to show their shocked expressions. Soon after that, Touma just walked up and gave Sherry an uppercut square in the jaw. Take THAT, women’s equality. To finish, after the surprisingly competent Index vs Golem fight, the episode literally ended with the golem punching and a bunch of blue sparklies. I have no idea what blue sparklies mean. Maybe Index is made of glitter.
Aside from those, it was the normal exposition heavy talking heads bit. It only got especially bad near the start when the soldiers were literally firing through the entire thing. Apparently in the future, everybody has infinite ammo. The flavor of this week’s exposition focused mostly on Hyouka letting us know how much of a monster she is, but that’s okay if she can use her power to help the person that saved her from her weird world of morphing people. I was personally hoping for more domestic abuse from Touma during that entire 10 minute spiel.
Overall though, Index was suitably cool enough to bypass the trashcan robots in menace factor and had a really fitting insert song to go with her little golem subjugation scene. Plus, Touma made me laugh twice. There was still a lot more yammering than there needed to be and far too many flashbacks to the previous episode, but let’s face it… as far as episodes for this show go, it was actually pretty solid. Minus the blue sparklies, of course.
PS This shot of Sphinx is priceless.
PPS I have no idea why, but I really like that SWAT commander and I hope there’s more of her in the future.

Wait… so… where’d the blue sparklies go?
