A Certain Magical Exposition #24 — Yakety Yak

March 19th, 2009

Don’t talk back.

Impressions:

Well, this sucked. As an end to the arc, as a stepping off point for the series, and just as an episode in general. The series didn’t end so much as just stop. However, it did not suck enough to be entertainingly bad, so I can’t even muster up enough caring to mock it. No horrible direction, nor incomprehenisble plot tacked on in the eleventh hour, just your run of the mill dry boring clumsy exposition, which is arguably even worse. Instead, the episode was just the standard Touma blathering ad nauseam, and then he punched a few helpless things, sometimes women, sometimes giant immobile golems. He never stopped proselytizing through the entire episode, and even got to rehash the whole "you’re not a monster" speech just in case a third time was needed. Or are we on the fourth?

Anyway, Sherry takes two more shots to the chops. It turns out that nobody’s made of blue sparklies. And then Hyouka vanishes, restoring the natural order, yet still creating a bit of a vacuum in the air as her enormous deadweights disappear along with her. The most entertaining part of the episode was Kuroko assaulting Mikoto in the shower… which… probably shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody. I’d wager that Kuroko assaulting Mikoto would be a high point no matter what show you stuck it in. Then some random foreshadowing with the cutest Archbishop in the world, and back to square one for the usual Touma-Index headchomp gag. Yawn.

At least JCStaff didn’t miss a beat in showing off Index’s thighs. They may not always flaunt breasts, but give them any excuse to show thigh and they can’t resist.

Final thoughts at the bottom.

Final Thoughts:

Index definitely started off strong when it debuted. The premise was intriguing, the characters were well written, and the production good. Then the exposition started and it never really stopped. The show became so caught up in minutia that it forgot the cardinal rule of writing: "Show, don’t tell." There’s nothing wrong with a little exposition, but the series was all too often reduced to a bunch of gabbing heads. If the content was interesting, that’s forgiveable, but when almost all of it is relevant to that arc and that arc only, the smart monkeys learn that none of it actually matters.

That said, I’m honestly really not certain where I stand on this show quite yet. I can’t deny that so much of it is a blur that I really just can’t remember half of it. You never want your show to be forgettable, but when you cram it top to bottom with talking heads saying things that stop being relevant within two weeks, it’s unavoidable. It’s a shame because when the exposition stopped, the show was consistently excellent, but that’s the chocolate center hidden within a big clump of dirt. If you can learn to tune out all the static, then there is a pretty decent show under the mess with a bit of style and a lot of charm. However, it may take you more appletinis to get there than you’re willing to drink.

Yes yes, I know about Rail Gun getting its own show. It’s jive. Kuroko and Mikoto are both cool chicas. There are also about 14 or so more Index series novels that the show hasn’t gotten to, so I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ve seen of any of them.

20 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Nayrael says:

Well, at least the arcs from now on will be more connected with the main plot so the exposition may be a bit more tolerable.

  • sage says:

Index’s thighs are a miracle of the universe.

Mikoto is a true miracle of the universe.

  • Lollerman says:

Really, Railgun is getting it’s own show? Wow, a spin-off that may actually come off being better than the original. How about that? Course, with no Index or Touma, we’re going to have to hope that the yuri undertones will be strong enough to carry the show. Still, JC staff did a fine job with Lesbian undertones in Zero no Tsukaima, so it shouldn’t be too much of a stretch.

Still, I have to say that this show was like one good episode for 4 episodes of dull. I don’t understand why they didn’t stop with the exposition after the first arc, cause half of it didn’t make any damn sense.

Do you really think they’ll produce a second season? Were the ratings good enough to justify a second season?

  • Aroduc says:

Ratings don’t really mean anything. They’re terrible for everything that doesn’t air in primetime anyway. It’s a totally different economic model from US TV because of the much much smaller consumer base. DVD/BR sales are all that matter, and while it’s not breaking any records, it’s doing rather well. Better than the second season of ZnT at any rate.

  • Hibiki says:

I gave up Index around ep 10. Should I watch the rest to understand BiriBiri anime?

    • Anonymous says:

lawl, that was the start of the arc i found most interesting and relevant to the spin-off, just my opn.

  • escape clause says:

Lollerman, Index isn’t in it, but you’re mistaken if you think Touma isn’t in it.

Basically, Mikoto takes the role Touma takes in Index, while he takes Mikoto’s.

Hibiki, no there should be no need. They’ll likely animate the level upper arc which starts before the first arc of Index and ends towards the end of it. So you’ll have already seen all the relevant parts.

    • magnumslinger says:

“Basically, Mikoto takes the role Touma takes in Index, while he takes Mikoto’s.”

Well put. And it’s another reason why those two are perfect together.

  • shio says:

I like how they felt it necessary to show the footage of the half-clothed characters from a few episodes back in order to justify what great times everyone once had.

Still, Hyouka’s parting was bittersweet, and I think my eyes welled just a tad at the “let’s play again” line.

  • Anonymous says:

I always enjoyed index, but I can tolerate dull better than most (which is arguably not a good thing). I’m sad to see it go, but knowing JCstaff we’ll get many more seasons.

Can’t wait for the rail gun series too.

  • chad001 says:

…WTF? THIS IS THE FLIPPLIN END OF INDEX? WHAT KIND OF SICK JOKE IS THIS? THEY JUST LEAVE IT 1/3 OF THE WAY THERE… WITH CLIFFHANGERS, NEW CHARACTERS, AND NO RESOLUTIONS… DAMN YOU JCSTAFF!

  • Yue says:

I think it is better to simultaneously incorporate both action and exposition but…

the only character here in this series capable of in~battle analysis is Accelerator. ^o^

  • YHK says:

I admire you finishing this. I just couldn’t make it past the horrible, horrible exposition in each episode. Which was a shame- I really enjoyed the manga, which seems much more tolerable when it comes to exposition, for me, at least. I had high hopes for the anime that were destroyed once the first person started blathering. The exposition in this series somehow makes Fate/Stay Night seem like a wonder of streamlined information delivery.

  • Honoo says:

… Anyone not questioning who is that blondie gaijin Stiyl was talking to?

I probably know, but it’s just a guess since I don’t have knowledge of the novels (apart from what characters exist in it and who are they).

  • Darco_emp says:

looking forward to season 2, War arcs have alot more action parts in them, just hope this does not become ZnT 2nd season level….

  • Aroduc says:

    Honoo,
She’s Neccessarius’ Archbishop. Or at the very least, some random Archbishop that Stiyl takes orders from.

A mediocre finale, but looking forward to another season.

And of course we can always use more Railgun!!

  • anon says:

Biri biri + Lesbian teleport raep = win.
