2009 Spring Season Oktoberfest-in-March Preview Spectacular

March 23rd, 2009

Nine short days left.

I always feel the need to remind people that none of us doing these things really has anything but at best a random guess at how shows are going to turn out, and at worst are using woefully inadequate information copied off of someone’s poorly translated website blurb. If you’re taking any of these ‘previews’ as anything aside from idle chatter and self-indulgent ego stroking (myself included), then shame on you. All we’re really doing is looking at some pretty pictures and restating our genre preferences. I’m personally dead wrong in my assessment of at least two shows per season, and there’s indisputable physical proof that I’m awesome. I hate to think what that means for those scoring far lower on the Fonz-o-metertm.

Once things actually start airing, the usual crowd of suspects will weigh in with comments that could actually be considered somewhat informed, or at the very least, based on the immediate gut reaction to around 4-8% of a show, as opposed to the current 0.0001%. The JPHinano conglomerate like to sit in their balcony and swear at most things that come their way, while Omni’s erstwhile cronies fill the opposite end of the spectrum. Totali’s probably lying about wanting to cover fewer shows this season as well, so he may or may not have something to share with the rest of the class.

This won’t include OVAs, shows under 5 minutes long, things made in Flash, or anything that is being made for the sole purpose to shamelessly sell tops, cellphone accessories, or 20 year old shows.. Sorry, I know how important it is to inform you of Beyblade, Bakugan, Jewel Pet, and Dragonball. Please write your complaints on the back of a blank check and mail them to me so I can properly respond. I plan on watching at least the first episode of everything listed below, and while I may not have much intelligent to say about those outside of my interests, I’ll at least feel better for giving them a shot.

I’ve also put together all the released PVs and CMs I could find as of last night. There are 40. I am so not going to list them, and no, I will not upload them somewhere else. 400 MB isn’t the easiest thing to toss up online.

Asura Cryin’
http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/asura/
Studio: Seven Arcs
Genre: Fantasy, Drama
Further Information: ANN Entry
Premiers April 1st

Summary:
Tomoharu moves to a new town to live on his own. However, a spirit girl appears, bound to him through a trunk that his brother left him. Magi soon appear seeking the trunk and Tomoharu is drawn into a mystical battle as he learns the mysteries of this world, and the ghost world that was destroyed before it.

Personal Outlook:
I do like 7Arcs, despite the tremendously lame White Album, and this is being done by their usual director (White Album was not), so I’m hopeful for it, although it’s a little hard to tell exactly how they’re going to present this one. The TAF promo was also all over the place, showing everything from monsters to SWAT teams to what appear to be organic mecha. Who knows.
Interestingly, the initial broadcast for this is an hour after Queen’s Blade on AT-X. Interesting to me at any rate.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Romance with the undead is overrated.

Queen’s Blade – Wandering Warriors
http://queensblade.tv/
Studio: ARMS
Genre: Fantasy, Action
Further Information: ANN Entry, Flying Buffalo’s Book Translations
Premiers April 1st

Summary:
A tournament is held to decide the new queen. The rules are simple, the participants must be female, and they must fight until one cannot or will not fight any longer. These are the stories of the tournament’s participants.

Personal Outlook:
First off, the Queen’s Blade series is based off of Lost Worlds… those RPG booklets that were all the rage in 1983. To put it another way, it’s designed as an RPG for two nerds to get together and look at the other person’s softcore porn of choice. Chew on that for a little bit. I’m not sure how I feel about this one though, especially given how lackluster IkkiGG was (exact same production team). We’ll see if they can throw together enough of the good action to make whatever mind numbing story they decide to use stomachable. On the other hand, the promo DVD ARMS put out was… well… fascinating to say the least. Got to give props to any studio clearly enjoying their work like that.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Adding boobs to ancient RPGs? How original.

Warring Era Basara (Devil Kings)
http://www.sengokubasara.tv/
Studio: Production IG
Genre: Action
Further Information: ANN Entry
Premiers April 1st

Summary:
During the era of eternal war, Oda Nobunaga rose to power above all others and nearly consolidated his rule over the entire country as the Devil King… and then an unknown general rode forth from the north with an army to challenge Nobunaga and seize the conquered lands for himself. His name is Date Masamune.

Personal Outlook:
Based on the game of the same name… and essentially Capcom’s attempt to make a knockoff Dynasty Warriors franchise based on Japanese military history instead of Ro3K. That should already tell you what to expect. Heavy metal, a joke of a story loosely based on actual history, and burly men killing lots of grunts. I doubt it’ll translate to an anime well. These things never do.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Needs more swordians to be a truly horrible game.

Studio: Satelight
Genre: Science Fiction, Mecha, Sports

Premiers April 2nd

Summary:
On a distant planet, the sport of Bigfoot Basketball… basketball played in giant mecha… becomes the most popular form of entertainment. All sorts of kids get drawn into it and seek fame on the court.

Personal Outlook:
Well, can’t deny that it looks stylish and extremely well produced, but I can’t stand basketball nor mecha. I don’t think combining the two is going to help draw me in. Now… maybe if they made a mecha-hockey show…

Preseason Swing Rating:
Kill it. Kill it with a bazooka.

K-ON!

Studio: Kyoto Animation
Genre: Comedy
Further Information: ANN Entry
Premiers April 2nd

Summary:
Four girls who love music attempt to revive their school’s music club, only none of them have ever played instrument before in their lives.

Personal Outlook:
Thumbing through the comic this is based on was painful.
"What instrument do you play?"
"…"
"…"
"Castanets?"
*Ba-dum tss!*
It’s also been quite a while since I’ve enjoyed a KyoAni show. They’re tossing a newbie director up for this one too. Why am I getting deja vu here? Maybe they’ll fire this one after a couple episodes and bring in someone else just like they did the last time they adopted a comic. They’ll have to add a ton to what’s already there to get me involved.

Preseason Swing Rating:
It’s Saturday Night Fever!

Pandora Hearts
http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/ph/
Studio: Xebec
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
Further Information: ANN Entry, Animesuki Thread
Premiers April 2nd

Summary:
Oz Bezarius has the perfect life… until his 15th birthday. He’s thrown into a prison called the Abyss. He’s saved by a bloodstained rabbit calling herself Alice who contracts herself to him and leads him out of the Abyss, but back into the mysteries of his family and how they’re connected to it.

Personal Outlook:
Many of the themes in this one are loosely based around Through the Looking Glass, but about as much as… say… Ikki Tousen is an accurate depiction of Cao Cao’s conquest of China. It might turn out alright, but Xebec is seriously where Production IG sends their terrible staff to die in ignominy. The most ‘successful’ show they’ve made in almost half a decade is Kanokon. It’d be nice if they bucked the trend here, but it’s not a smart bet.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Melon en potentia.

Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~
http://www.phantom-r.jp/
Studio: Bee Train
Genre: Drama, Action
Further Information: ANN Entry, Memento’s Excellent Game Writeup
Premiers April 2nd

Summary:
Mafia members are being picked off one by one by the mysterious assassin group known as Inferno. A boy witnesses one of the murders and is kidnapped. His identity is stripped from him and he begins a new life as one of Inferno’s assassins.

Personal Outlook:
Bee Train doing a show about girls and guns. Now where have I seen that before? At least they have a relatively decent story to work with… although again… this is Bee Train, so the show could end up being about a group of Dutch schoolmarms delivering honey via fruit bat flocks.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Stop chasing me, you nonsensical studio.

Hayate the Combat Butler!! 2
http://hayatenogotoku.com/
Studio: JC Staff
Genre: Comedy
Further Information: ANN Entry
Premiers April 3rd

Summary:
The continuing adventures of Hayate, pressed into butler service by the tyrannical and socially inept Nagi, and all the women/tigers/tigerwomen throwing themselvs at him.

Personal Outlook:
I can’t say I was much of a fan of the first year of this show, and I doubt bouncing it out of prime time will have a positive effect on its quality. I really wouldn’t count on me sticking with this one past checking out the new music.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Kill Santa; steal pants.

Slap Up Party

Premiers April 3rd

Summary:
The Cursed Light of Kazan has descended upon the world, tainting people and places. One man afflicted by the curse rallies others to his side as he sets out to discover its secrets.

Personal Outlook:
Adapted from an MMO. Keep in mind that this was conceived well before Gonzo laid off 70 people from their creative staff. If the best they could come up with was biting MMOs, then Gonzo’s financial collapse doesn’t seem so surprising anymore. I’m looking forward to this like I look forward to all MMO adaptations and Gonzo shows.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Four unspeakable horrors out of seven.

The Best!! Super Cool Class President

Studio: SynergySP, Shogakukan Music and Digital Entertainment
Genre: Romance, Drama

Premiers April 3rd

Summary:
Mimi has vowed to be the best class rep in her school’s history. However, she still has to deal with a group of troublemaking boys, one of whom she has a crush on.

Personal Outlook:
In a full on media blitz, this got a DS game, a trading card game, and now a show. That shoud be something of a clue that this show is aimed at the not-particularly discerning demographic of preteen girls tuning in for some delectable Saturday morning toy advertisements. I’m not even sure why I included it. Spite?

Preseason Swing Rating:

Summary:
Kou’s family runs a sports equipment store closely affiliated with a batting center run by a family with four daughters. As Kou grows up, he trains to be as good a pitcher as one of the sisters, even as his relationships with them develop and grow.

Personal Outlook:
Well, it’s taking over ZKC’s primetime slot, and Synergy’s at the helm, so it’ll probably be one of the best looking new shows this season. I read up on it probably more than I should have. It’ll be interesting to see if they stick with the original story, since it’s a little heavier than your usual Sunday morning faire. I’m not sure if I can really get behind the whole baseball side of things regardless, but we’ll see.

Preseason Swing Rating:
When your competition is the Pokemon Variety Hour, nothing actually has to make sense.

Players of the Divine Song Polyphonica crimson S
http://www.polyphonica.tv/
Studio: Diomedea
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
Further Information: ANN Entry, Wikipedia
Premiers April 4th

Summary:
Spirits are born in the world through music. Especially gifted musicians able to play Divine Songs are known as Dantists. One such Dantist was contracted by one of the strongest spirits in the world, the Red Elder Spirit Corticante, so that his voice would belong to her alone.

Personal Outlook:
Well, I can’t say that I liked the first series, but with a completely new staff, and events taking place before the first one, I’m more than willing to give it a second look. Corti was a wonderful character, just trapped in a show that went absolutely nowhere. Hopefully this one has a bit more excitement.

Preseason Swing Rating:

Shin Mazinger Impact! Z-Chapter

Studio: Bee Media, CODE
Genre: Mecha, Action
Further Information: ANN Entry, Wikipedia
Premiers April 4th

Summary:
More of Mazinger. Koji’s grandfather is killed, but not before bequeathing unto him a giant robot to fight the evil armies of Dr Hell.

Personal Outlook:
Ew, mecha. Although to be honest, this is from the era of mecha that I actually kind of like, when things were powered by something aside from teenage angst, military drama, and bad writing. Well… worse writing. Still, even under the best of circumstances, I’m really not qualified to do much more with mecha than complain about not having enough SP to spam Focus every round. I’m sure a plethora of other people will have more than enough to say about this one anyway.

Preseason Swing Rating:
God damn it, Jeremiah.

Battlefield Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles (Valkyria Chronicles)
http://www.valkyria-anime.com/
Studio: A-1 Pictures
Genre: Adventure
Further Information: ANN Entry, Game Site, Full Video Playthrough
Premiers April 4th

Summary:
Gallia is a neutral nation trapped between two other countries at war. It’s drawn into the conflict when invasion forces march across the country and young men and women are forced to join the resistance army to repel the attack.

Personal Outlook:
I’m actually surprised that so few console SRPGs get adaptations. They’re already episodic, and if you cut out the fights against random grunts, you can just copy the relatively concise dialogue and send the writers home early. Anyway, military drama’s not really one of the things I generally look forward to, but the game’s solid, and what I’ve watched has seemed very charming. Then again, the director has already stated his intention to change up lots of things to better control the flow, most notably Alicia’s bra size. *shrug* I just know that I’ll be sad if Alicia doesn’t shoot the face off some grunts in the tutorial battle.

Preseason Swing Rating:
About six times more bounce than the game.

Before Green Gables
http://www.nippon-animation.co.jp/before_GG/
Studio: Nippon Animation
Genre: Drama
Further Information: ANN Entry
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
Part of the Masterpiece collection. The prequel to the novel Anne of Green Gables, telling about Anne’s life as a child before she was adopted at Green Gables.

Personal Outlook:
Has the Japanese Masterpiece series ever produced anything particularly notable? Only they could take a novel and convert it to a series at literally the pace of two minutes per page. One episode per 11.5 pages. Fellowship of the Ring was 40 pages longer and SIX HUNDRED minutes shorter than this. I’m not even certain how that works.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Spoiler: Anne’s parents die.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Studio: Bones
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
Further Information: ANN Entry
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
A reboot of the 2003 series following two brothers who lost parts of themselves when they attempted forbidden techniques to revive their dead mother.

Personal Outlook:
I didn’t mind the first series, but I liked the second half a lot more than the first. The idea of watching those bits again fills me with something other than enthusiasm. I’m sure everybody and their pygmy goat will be covering this anyway, so no need for me to wade in. Besides, after KyoAni’s Munto shenanigans, I wouldn’t be shocked if the first 13 episodes were just touched up versions of the old show.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Baaaaaaa…

Guin Saga
http://www.guinsaga.net/
Studio: Satelight
Genre: Fantasy, Adventure
Further Information: ANN Entry
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
A man named Guin wakes up with no memory and a leopard mask attached to his head. All he can remember are his fighting abilities as he sets out to find the answers to his past.

Personal Outlook:
Don’t let the burly man-leopard fool you, the novels this is based on are actually rather well known for being A.) 30 years long and B.) Pushing the envelope a bit with sadomasochistic gay themes. Maybe they’ll keep those, maybe not. It’s somewhat horrifying to even consider. I don’t think it really gets into that until 10 or 15 years into the series, but I’m not really certain that I’m sold on the Conan the Barbarian knockoff anyway.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Even among slimes, one must be king.

Saki
http://www.saki-anime.com/
Studio: Gonzo
Genre: Comedy, Mahjong
Further Information: ANN Entry, Animesuki Thread
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
Saki Miyanaga always lost her New Years money to her family when she played mahjong with them, so grew to hate it. However, when her friend drags her into his mahjong club against some of the top players in the nation, she intentionally throws the match by using her ability to control her score with almost inhuman skill. From there, her fate is sealed as a member of their club.

Personal Outlook:
Well, mahjong and bad CG practically go hand in hand, so Gonzo might actually do alright with this one. As far as I’m concerned though, mahjong may as well be Yu-Gi-Oh for all the sense it makes to me, which leaves this as just a show about magical CG rectangles and middle schoolers with impossibly large chests vowing to do their breasts… er… best.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Because Akagi’s better with little girls.

Shangri-La
http://www.anime-shangri-la.jp/
Studio: Gonzo
Genre: Drama, Action
Further Information: ANN Entry
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
The story is set in a neo-futuristic age, in which Tokyo has turned into the world’s largest “jungle-polis” that absorbs carbon dioxide. A tower city called Atlas houses the rich and privileged, and is the object of yearning of all that are not allowed to enter. But Atlas also has ancient secrets which cause a sudden whirl of events. Festooned by colorful characters such as a riotous teenage girl, a child genius, a juvenile princess, a drag queen, a female doctor, an army major, and an elderly gentleman and lady, SHANGRI-LA’s hard-core world view plays out as an anime action saga.

Personal Outlook:
I couldn’t resist copying Gonzo’s description of their own show verbatim, it’s that corny. A ‘hard-core’ riotous teenager, princess, drag queen and a lady? I’m also a little worried about how the show’s world view is festooned. Isn’t that illegal in Nebraska? How can I not watch? pour bleach in my eyes and pray for sweet release? It’s being simul-subbed anyway, so there’s really no reason for me to do anything… thankfully.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Protip: Forests are weak against fire.

Summer Storm!
http://www.starchild.co.jp/special/natsunoarashi/
Studio: Shaft
Genre: Comedy
Further Information: ANN Entry
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
A socially inept city boy named Yasaka protects a beautiful girl from being attacked while visiting the countrysid. She senses something unusual about him and drags him to the top of a hill where they find another world. The next morning, everything is back to normal, but the girl has decided to live with Yasaka and he becomes swept up in her life.

Personal Outlook:
Well, on one hand, it’s Shaft. On the other hand, the little I browsed of the comic was pretty awful. On the other other hand, Shaft isn’t exactly known for sticking close to the source. On the other other other hand, I haven’t really been particularly impressed with Shaft’s last few projects. This one practically embodies something that needs to be seen before anything intelligent can be said about it one way or the other.

Tayutama -Kiss on my Deity-
http://www.tayutama.com/
Studio: Silver Link
Genre: Romance, Comedy
Further Information: ANN Entry, Mou Yamete!’s Assorted Rantings (NSFW)
Premiers April 5th

Summary:
When Yuuri accidentally burns down a forest and releases a torrent of spirits upon the city, he tries to summon a goddess to drive them away. When she incarnates as a young, sick girl, she makes him promise to marry her once she grows up, but her future and his battles with the spirits are both closer than Yuuri imagined.

Personal Outlook:
The more I read about this, the more contempt I have for all the other people lazily copying half-assed previews originating from some ignorant and probably illitera… Wait, damn… I mean… uh… Crap. Let me try that again.

The more I read about this, the better it actually sounds. It is based on porn, but it’s Lump of Sugar, so they veer heavily towards lots of sillynss instead of… well… let’s say Rance or a clusterblintz of sick girls all reliant on one schmuck to save them from magical cancer. Then again, the director (School Days, Amaenaideyo, Lovedol) has me more than a little spooked. The promo had a lot of hitting things with hammers though, so I think this one could turn out pretty well.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Blindly copying other people’s terrible homework is bad, mmmkay?

Summary:
The oracle Riannon is kidnapped to be sacrificed to appease the resurrected demon lord, Arawn, prophesized to bring the world to ruin. However, in the time since his ‘death,’ the prophecies have become corrupted and lost their original meaning. He awakens and kills the evil priest that summoned him, granting Riannon her freedom. She’s so grateful that she declares herself Arawn’s wife, putting the Gael tribe under his control as he leads them to his true destiny.

Personal Outlook:
Just like Ikki Tousen’s staff ‘graduated’ to Queen’s Blade, Utawarerumono’s staff has moved on to this. I usually like Leaf a lot, but T3 just never really clicked with me. My main three memories from playing it about three years ago are: A.) Man, Riannon and Arthur suck, B.) This battle engine sucks, and C.) Octavia, I don’t think tying up Arawn so that you can pleasure him is a particularly efficient form of revenge. I liked Arawn, but most of his harem of wives (and manwives) were varying degrees of irritating. At least they’re using a fusion of the PC and PS3 art styles. Ria no longer looks like she’s suffering from Downs, Arawn’s chin isn’t a sack of bricks, and Octavia’s thighs no longer scare the living hell out of me.
Also note that this is being simulcast in English on that same crazy network that broadcast Black God. Kudos to you if you’re one of their 2,000 or so national subscribers.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Tis the season for RPG adaptations.

Summary:
Kajika was born from a romantic tryst between a Japanese woman and an international magnate. 14 years later, her father summons her to him and orders her to choose a husband from among business and international interests, but she’s actually impressed by all of them and learns about the intrigue of the ultra-rich as she tries to decide on a husband.

Personal Outlook:
Oh boy! Girly manharem from the 80s! There’s absolutely no way that this could be as awesome as Neo-Angelique Abyss was. I don’t see a single monocle on any of those guys, and that sure as hell doesn’t look like a 14 year old either. I’d expect more than a few updates for a more modern society… like Kajika not being 14 anymore, but that can be your added throwback creepiness to what the series originally contained.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Six shellfish, because it’s going to be a long night for Kajika.

Summary:
Teito lived his life as a slave, without any memory of his past until he’s discovered to hold a rare power and is sent to a military academy to develop it. While there, he discovers clues to his past and becomes embroiled in a war turning his friends against him, and forcing him to seek his enemies for help.

Personal Outlook:
Oh boy… amnesia. The second and sadly not final "somebody gets amnesia, becomes badass" show of the season. I have something of a love/hate relationship with DEEN anyway. Unfortunately, the staff for this one is kind of terrible (screenplay by the guy who brought us heat seeking rollerskating zombies!? Sweet!). I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Summary:
Based on the true history of the Era of Three Kingdoms, centered on Cao Cao and his desire to free China from its ancient ideals of foolish bravery and glory in warfare.

Personal Outlook:
I’m a whore for Ro3K, but not when it’s done terribly. I’m not really certain why, but almost all of these Ro3K stories tend to be crippled by absolutely hideous production values all around, and from the promo stuff, this is no exception.

Summary:
Chasing after her runaway mother, Nicoletta finds her with a new lover, one who owns an upscale restaurant with a strange quirk. All the staff there are older, distinguished men to provide the proper ambiance. Nicoletta manages to get them to accept her as their new apprentice and starts learning about life at the Casetta Dell’Orso.

Personal Outlook:
This really just isn’t my kind of show. No knock on it or anything, but these pastoral ambience shows just bore me. I’m also a little bit weirded out by the whole "old men in glasses" fetish that this show seems to have going for it.

Preseason Swing Rating:
I don’t trust Japan with when they put a teenage girl with a bunch of old men.

Summary:
In 2010,  a curious missile attack strikes an uninhabited area of Japan, causing no real damage. Soon after, a Japanese woman visiting American is saved by a man carrying nothing but a cellphone filled with money and a gun. He has no memory of his past, but the two of them are drawn into discovering the truth behind the missile attack.

Personal Outlook:
And here’s the third amnesia series. Production IG’s been in quite a bit of a slump lately, as you can tell by them still touting that they did GitS almost half a decade later. It’s even worse when you remember that Xebec is part of them and that Bee Train used to be. On the other hand, the director here is the same one behind GitS and Moribito, but those are the only things he’s done, and this will be his first time as a writer. I think it’ll probably turn out pretty well as a show, just not something I’d be particularly interested in.

Premiers April 11th

Summary:
The intertwined stories of a bunch of teenagers in middle and high school, falling in love with each other and having more sex than a Tri-Delt panty donation drive.

Personal Outlook:
Okay, I might be lying about that last part.
Let’s see… written by the same person who did the abhorrent Ichigo 100% and published in the only marginally less abhorrent Jump. Oh right, and Jump cancelled it, so it couldn’t even cut it on their ever so high standards. Maybe if JC Staff decides to just take the characters and write their own story, it’ll turn out okay. It wouldn’t be the first time for something like this (see: Kimikiss). On the other hand, with a newbie director, I wouldn’t count on even a complete overhaul doing a lot of good. Also notable for having the rare period in the title for reasons I can’t even begin to imagine.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Something about this one just fills me with unholy dread.

Summary:
Plug is a plain office worker by day, but in reality she’s come from another world with a special power. She can imbue people with good fortune and change their destinies. Her mission is to travel the world and spread good luck wherever she goes.

Personal Outlook:
I detest when shows mix English and Japanese nonsensically in their titles. Fight Homerun? One Round Fight? Make some bloody sense! Anyway, I can’t say the tentacle bondage in the promo pics excites me, nor does having Hibari at the helm. It’s not out until late in the season anyway.

Preseason Swing Rating:
Probably worse for you than most fast food.

Summary:

Well, as usual, there’s next to nothing on Mondays and Tuesdays, and an absolute mess on the weekends. I’m definitely sticking with Regios, but aside from that, who knows? As usual, many things intrigue me, a few frighten me, and nothing really looks like it’s going to break my heart if it turns out terrible. Stay tuned to next Wednesday (or possibly slightly before if we have more of those SURPRISE early netcasts like last season) when this stuff actually starts coming out.

50 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Totali says:

    All I’m watching is Dragonball!!!!!

  • Aroduc says:

I know, Totali. Believe me, I know.

  • Kraker2k says:

I dare you to watch a mecha show this season Arudoc, be it Mazinger or Basquash. Do it!

  • AnimeXploit says:

then we are all agreed, Drangonball Z is the best show this season. (on the other hand I read the Saki manga and it was pretty ok —___—)

  • Hinano says:

The Best!! Super Cool Class President feels like the Kodomo no Omocha for the new generation. I miss the good ‘ol days T3T

  • Hibiki says:

I thought Gonzo’s going out of business? How come they are doing 3 shows this season (and troll of Uruk probably next season)

Also, should I buy PS3 to play Valkyria Chronicles?

    • Kikaifan says:

If found Valkyria Chronicle fun but the gameplay is pretty shallow. I don’t think it’s buy-a-new-console material.

  • Chen says:

Wait, Spice and Wolf S2 isn’t this season? I am heartbroken.

  • GF202020 says:

…that’s pretty sad when an anime has to restore to freakin’ bondage on the freakin’ preview pic to try and get people to watch it.

…Also…what was wrong with Tales of Destiny? :V

…oh wait…I know. the lack of Wakamoto. Don’t worry, ToD2 fixes that. *shot*

  • Kikaifan says:

Six times the bounce? Did you ever see Selvaria?

  • Anonymous says:

No matter how bad Bee Train does, I’m going to watch Phantom of Inferno. I loved the Visual Novel, so I’ll at least be able to laugh at how horribly bad it is comparatively.

Still, quite a few shows that are perking my interest, and as always I’ll be looking forward to your reviews of the episodes to see if there are any other gems out there.

  • windoze says:

__Man__ of the themes in this one are loosely based around….

    you are illeterate

  • Yue says:

    Arudoc is oozing with awesomeness.

K-ON! = this going to be a riot! Girls rock and roll!
Hayate = JCStaff/Gainax collaboration will be sweet.
Warring Era Basara = this is Casshern season 2 ^o^

  • Fhal says:

Asura Crin’ will probably be interesting, but, why do I feel another exposition heavy show from the previews?

  • Ryan A says:

I feel pessimistic about Spring now… but hey, hammers in the Kiss on my Deity PV do make me slightly cheery for some reason.

    Let’s hope for surprises

  • shio says:

Thanks for the write-up as always!!

Hello Saki, I don’t believe we’ve met. My blood melts for gamble anime so I hope it doesn’t disappoint.

VC looks promising, and the seiyuu are some of my favorites, so even if it sucks I’ll have that to keep me going.

Sengoku? Enough said. Sign me up.

  • ximpa says:

Actually Tears to Tiara follows the PS3 version only, luckily, which had some story elements rewritten (and they took out all the H scenes, which was good for me as I hate H games).

  • ... says:

A mecha-hockey series…let’s have it set in Canada! We can have the U.S. being the bitter rivals, and the Russians the big bad guys. It will be great, I promise.

    • shio says:

Now all you need is the underdog Jamaican team and you’ve got yourself a blockbuster!

  • sterling01 says:

Nitro+’s eroge always get bad anime adaptations so I’m not looking forward to Phantom. Oh and just so you know Pandora Hearts features amnesia as a plot
Also, whoever originally wrote that Tayutama summary needs to be shot

  • bakaohki says:

…what about the new season of Chi’s Sweet Home? :P

  • Anonymous says:

i’m watching queen’s blade for the plot and character development

btw we can answer comments now, welcome to the 21st century

  • sa-chan says:

I really wait for shangri la.

  • Aroduc says:

Except for the pads, belt, and hair? ^^

  • “Summer Storm” is directed by Shinbo, who directed Negima!? (the second series) and Pani Poni Dash.

I think we can be damned sure he’s going to strike out on his own rather than sticking close to the manga.

    • Aroduc says:

He also directed Zetsubou Sensei, Hidamari Sketch, and Maria Holic, none of which strayed particularly far… aside from presentation.

  • Anonymous says:

Seems better then the current season if you ask me, although Saki is the only thing I really look forward to.

  • ubu roi says:

OMG. Wake me when it’s summer already…

  • Lollerman says:

To be honest, I can’t find anything in this season to be excited about. Almost all of it feels like a been there done that story line. And why the heck are they rebooting the FMA series anyway? Didn’t they get a good 51 ep plus movie deal out of it? What more do they have to say?

I feel just like Ubu roi, wake me up when this season is over.

Just out of curiosity, Arudoc, do you know if Cross Game is a 24/6 or 52 ep season? Cause that should give me a good idea as to when to expect a ZKC sequel (keeping fingers crossed.)

  • Anonymous says:

I’m just waiting for A Certain Scientific Railgun.

  • sa-chan says:

I agree with ubu roi. But I wait for Shangri La and Phantom.
For against, we must give chance to all others

  • Rawr says:

Saki manga did not contain Yu-gi-oh esque cosplay time-filler sequences to distinguish every single move, instead, they gave detailed WTF reactions.

For fuck’s sake, Akagi got through its abhorred character designs with PURE FUCKING PLOT AND BADASSRY, so WHY, GONZO, WHY DO YOU HAVE TO SHOVE YUGIOH WHERE IT’S NOT NEEDED when you have good character designs filled with moe AND a decent source material to work with?

  • pat says:

none of the new series interest me to be honest, i’ll probably be watching summer storm only since i read the manga and thought of it to be promising.

  • FlareKnight says:

I agree let’s bring on the mecha-hockey series :). Always picking sports like baseball, boxing, basketball, give the sports that don’t start with ‘b’ a shot.

Definitely an entertaining preview. No one has a clue how good these shows are going to be. Might as well not pretend to know.

Though am looking forward to the Fullmetal Alchemist one. Was interesting to hear that they were just about done the manga so we’ll get to see the full story this time. Would hate for that stupid movie to be the last animated thing I saw from that series.

  • Dana Fang says:

Guin Saga looks good; it looks like it has a mix of beautiful visuals adventure and action-my favorite combination.

I’m really not sure what else I want to watch…

  • Aistis says:

Emm… I used your information in my website…

  • samantha hellen rodrigues says:

olá eu sou a samantha queria que voces mandassem imagem do penguim girl

  • Sakura says:

    yo!!!!!!!I love animes!!!!esp Shugo Chara and Naruto!!LOL!!

  • […] 2009 Spring: The ultimate in doom and gloom, a season everyone predicted would challenge the stock market for new lows. I left the comment: “Wake me when it’s summer.” Instead, at look what we’ve gotten: Asura’s Cryin’ is delivering cute girls, an interesting protagonist, and a mecha show that isn’t dominated by mecha. If they can keep from blowing the narrative like they did between ep. 1 and 2, it might work out. Then there’s Queen’s Blade, which is just totally, horribly, god-awful bad…and yet manages to deliver at least one *schwing!* moment every episode, that you’re too embarrassed to admit to. Everyone bags on it, but you know they’re still waiting for the moment we finally get to see Risty topless — which you know isn’t going to happen until Gonzo has dragged us kicking and screaming through 2/3 of the series, bleeding from our eye-sockets… Oh wait, this is by ARMS. We can’t even count on that… Eden of the East is giving me vibes like Bourne done as an animé. It might just have something going here. I forgot to check out Pandora Hearts, which looks like it’s going to be bad fantasy, but Tears to Tiara is so far turning out to be good fantasy. I mean, if you can believe the entire village went boar hunting and mushroom picking in the middle of the night, leaving the most important girl behind in the village alone. This show reminds me of Bastard, probably because of the whole summoned-bad-guy/deity-who-isn’t-exactly-what-they-expected bit. And then there’s the biggest surprise of the season so far: Saki. Who’d have thought Mahjonng would be moé? Ok, I’ve been bagging on this show, and I still have the aforementioned issues with it. However, it’s beginning to look like what Saki thought was the trouble in her family really was just the manifestation of a deeper problem. I’m hoping this show doesn’t turn angsty and do an Angelic Layer plot. […]
