ToraDora! #10 — Slapping Ami With Slimy Things

December 3rd, 2008

You give it to her good, Ryuuji.

Impressions:

Ami takes central stage for the most part in this episode and I’m actually starting to really like her. While Kitamura and Minori are screwing around and being doofuses, she sits on the sideline with Ryuuji and sighs about the stupidity. She’s really doing a rather good job of transferring from arrogant to simply aloof and they’re selling her growing attraction to Ryuuji rather well. I particularly enjoyed her shift from happily teasing Ryuuji about Minori back to general pissed off mode when he refused to talk to her. For as deceptive as she is with the random strangers of the world and all the teasing she does, she’s easily the most upfront and direct of all the main characters in their relationships with each other. Speaking of her… she was especially bouncy this episode. I think JC Staff plundered the shading budget to give her some extra wiggle.

Most of the rest was about Minori, but it wasn’t really anything that I found particularly interesting. As predicted, she and doofus were behind all the ghost prank stuff. Even her ghost talk last episode was only half true since she was just trying to prime Taiga and Ryuuji for screwing around with them. I suppose it’s karmic backlash for them harassing her last episode, but it did feel like it undermined her big speech last episode a little bit. Ryuuji tried to salvage it by thanking her for the fun, but let’s be clear here… the best thing that happened to him during that little excursion was being trapped alone in a dark and cramped place with Ami… and he did nothing about it. Oh well. Nobody’s fooling themselves into thinking that Ami or Minori are real contenders anyway. C’est la vie.

Ami-chan FTW! Seriously though, Ami is the only one I can see as a love interest, Taiga is too much like a little sister/daughter and Minori, while humorous, is why too comic relief. Sooooo, Ami-chan FTW!

  • Rawr says:

Aren’t there relationships in reality where one party needs to be completely babysat? Usually, it’s the man in the relationship. In toradora’s case, it’s the woman, which comes off as no surprise to me, seeing that they switched the gender roles between Ryuuji and Taiga. That beign said, I don’t think Taiga is unquestionable as a love interest in regards that she needs to be pampered like a sister/daughter. However, I will agree, that Ami comes off as the most normal love interest, seeing that she’s the most mature about the matter; not that it changes that she doesn’t have a chance in heaven or hell.

  • Haesslich says:

Of course, the fun part in all this is that Ryuuji’s still focused on Minorin, which leaves Ami out in the cold…

I’m actually starting to really like her

I think she’s much better as we get to know her as well. Just her facade is such a turnoff.

  • Totali says:

I didn’t know DOA: Beach Volleyball had an anime.

  • […] Ami likes to be slapped by slimy things. […]

  • Aroduc says:

    Mmmmm Girl Ein Hitomi.

  • Yue says:

As a part of Toradora audience, a couple of my friends and I are clueless how Ryuji is going to end up with any of the girls and if he doesn’t then Kitamura gets all. >_<

  • cerevox says:

Its so bizarre. Its like they go out of thier way to make some other girl better then the lead. Everytime i think ami would be better then minori or taigi, i can’t help but think of clannad where i prefered Tomoyo to nagisa, or kyou, either one. They keep picking the wrong girl to to get with the guy.

  • sage says:

<+Totali> I can overcome anything with the power of love!
    <+Aroduc> Even Ami’s bounce?
    <+Totali> :(
    <+sage> I can’t overcome that.
<+sage> But I’d like to come over that.

  • sage says:

Just her facade is such a turnoff.

    Speak for yourself, man.

  • Zyl says:

But I *like* Ami’s facade. It’s the contrast between her facade and non-facade that makes her such an interesting and delicious chara. :3

  • EeoKero says:

Like Nagisa in Clannad, it feels kind of abrupt and out of flow when they hook up two characters that haven’t been built towards each other. Its like the Harry and Ron’s little sister thing in Harry Poter(Shut up! Its a good series). They leave relativley little space for anyone to get attached to her, then they kinda just tack it on “Oh, but I love you” at the end. Breaks flow I think.
