Yozakura Quartet #08 — No! Bad Akina! Stop Sucking!

November 21st, 2008

Man, you were doing so well for almost two whole months.

Impressions:

I have to admit that as the action started winding down and Enjin started ranting and raving about how much this world sucks blah blah blah humans and youkai blah blah blah will remake the world, I got up to get a brownie sundae, and when I came back, Enjin had his arms elbow deep in the city’s magic shrine thingy which caused one of the pillars to start growing branches and flowers, and there were tentacles sprouting everywhere. I have the feeling that I missed something while my attention was elsewhere, though I really don’t feel any powerful need to go back to figure out what exactly I missed. On the other hand, it was a damn delicious brownie sundae.

I was very happy with Hime all through this episode. She didn’t think twice about trying to kill Enjin, even though he was in Gin’s body. It wasn’t until Akina got involved and told her that Gin was still hanging on in there somewhere that she even hesitated, and at that point, Enjin was pretty much sick of playing around. I was also thrilled that Kyosuke was pretty much the only one who was actually able to land a hit on Enjin aside from Yae, who was all but forbid from interfering by Yuuhi. Sure, he coldcocked Enjin from behind… twice… once with a giant stone lantern, but Kotoha was using an anti aircraft gun and Hime upgraded her spear into some kind of laser weapon, so a hunk of stone is really a step down in comparison. I’m a bit confused as to why Akina didn’t help Ao and Kotoha try to take down Shinozuka. Fine, he thinks that his friend and Hime’s crush is still alive and so he doesn’t want to fight Enjin… but what’s his excuse for not wanting to fight Shinozuka? Laziness? I’m not sure he’d even be able to hit with his slow attacks anyway, but he could at least try to be useful instead of just getting in the way.

Preview:

Touka and more background on the city.

Does Akina’s thing even take time…or need to be aimed? It’s not explained real well be he lights up a whole city block in like the second episode.

    I think the problem is he’s just a sentimental ***** =)

edit: come to think of it…how useless is Hime if even Akina can catch her spear? Kotoha for the win!

Wow, after building up Akina as a really strong and likable character, as well as a love interest for hime, for 7 episodes they totally ruin it with this crappy episode. Really disappointing, it’s also disappointing to learn that Hime actually has romantic feelings for Gin rather than Akina.

The episode is so-so… it doesn’t match up with the manga (which is original source just info). Akina didn’t even use his power… was kind of very disappointing.
Spoiler ahead for the manga be careful!
In the manga it doesn’t look like Hime have feelings for Gin, didn’t saw a hint, though I can’t read japanese. Maybe it is out of the vision of Akina. It looks more hinted that Hime has a feelings (friendship or romance) for Akina. I hope they show in the anime where Hime got her scarf, it is kind of interesting in the manga
that actually makes it more interesting to me that she doesn’t have a romantic interest in Akina. He has no set “main” heroine to be with. How he ends up is genuinely up in the air to me. I would hope the show ends with him having a “main heroine” type love interest, not kyosuke’s sister who is an obvious side character. Either that or he sacrifices himself by getting himself sent over to “the other side” to save the town and get back Gin, which would be awesome imo. Then a whole arc how he slowly goes insane, all from his side xD. Then how he is unleashed upon the town somehow xD (uses his power indiscriminantly and has little self-awareness left).
