Today in Class 5-2 #01 – 04 — Kill It With Fire

October 5th, 2008

Well, at least it didn’t give me cancer.

New Season Disclaimer:

I’ll make a post for almost all new series (barring sequels) with a wrap-up and bullet point opinion of each once the premier week is over. Remember that these are just my kneejerk reactions to the first 20 minutes of shows, many of which in genres that I don’t even particularly like, but I do believe in giving every new series at least an episode to interest me.

Impressions:

Well, I was all ready and set to praise Xebec for only spending five minutes on handjobs and oral fixation (unless you want to make a ‘balls touching‘ joke), but then they had to go and make boob grab and blowjob jokes in the preview for next week’s episode, so screw that noise. I didn’t like the little bit of the OVA for this, and handing it off to Xebec certainly hasn’t improved the art and animation, which ranges from atrocious and mediocre. The jokes are so painfully drawn out and predictible that it renders them completely painful to see in motion. If they had sped everything up twice as fast, it’d be a lot more manageable, but when you constantly fill the time between setup and payoff by making ‘mature’ looking faces to delay the obvious punchline, even the dullest members of the audience reach the punchline before the show does. That air guitar segment also droned on and on and on without end. We get it, they’re playing with brooms and pretending that they’re guitars. I did not need to watch that for two straight minutes.

Uh… I have nothing else to say. This was easily the least funny comedy of the new season, and only marginally above Sunred in production values… and Sunred was probably made in Flash by two guys in their mom’s basement. Bleh.

  • Ryan A says:

WTF is up with the chara.design YUCK, NO! ^^

  • Hinano says:

I was gonna say the character designs look like they cast 25 year olds trying to look 12 and they all look like they’re on extacy or something

  • robin says:

The character designer(s) looks like the one(s) who did the hentai BOOBALICIOUS. Seriously, this looks like it is done by a hentai studio.

  • Joule says:

What the hell this looks bad. Certainly not what I was hoping for coming from the OVA which I enjoyed.

  • Kadian1364 says:

    >>> The character designer(s) looks like the one(s) who did the hentai BOOBALICIOUS. Seriously, this looks like it is done by a hentai studio.

Funny you say that, because the original studio for the OVA liked to draw Bible Black faces. Quite a curiosity.

  • ffffffffffffffffffffff says:

The studio that produced the original OVA did ero anime.

Also, “kill it with fire” is only supposed to be used for furries. Learn your internet catchphrases.

  • octoberasian says:

Ugh… so much different from the OVA, even the character designs. *sigh*

    Damn you Xebec. ><

  • Haesslich says:

Whoa, it’s like they had to figure out a way to top Okawari in terms of ‘fucked up’… and are succeeding.

  • Gummi says:

OMG look at the preview :O :O :O

  • TheBigN says:

Okawari wasn’t that bad. But it looks might this might be. D:

  • frog212 says:

I never saw the OVA, but I thought this show was funny. Made me laugh, but yea now that you mention it there are alot of sexual references jokes.

  • jeffng9 says:

    OMG wats with the deisgn.
the story as well nothing different from the past

  • Shance says:

    I don’t complain about the character design, really. It’s just that… well… it’s… crap… or something…

As for the story, typical Japanese kids having their first taste of adulthood. A lot of people were scarred for life with the OVA, but do they really need to be? I mean, this happens normally in that place, and some boys already lost their shit even before fifth grade! You can’t predict the powers of instinct, yes.

Well, another slice-of-life series won’t be bad to follow, if it catches the drift, that is.

  • Wut's wrong with the op? says:

    But I LIEK furries…

Wait, what’s this? Last thing I saw with fifth graders
was some three part little bit of innocence by Ureshii…

    oh, forget it!
