The Ruler of Nabari #16 — Let Him Fall!

July 21st, 2008

It’ll just make him stronger.

Impressions:

So, the only really interesting part of this episode was Kouichi’s past, and that was delivered so boringly that even that failed to keep my interest rooted in the episode. Blah blah blah, he was the result of one of the past people with the power of All-Nature who went nuts with it and experimented on all sorts of things. He, and apparently a cat, were one of the survivors and insinuated himself into Banten because he’s weird like that. Then to prove his "can’t die" story, he tries to fall off a cliff. Like the bullet hole in his chest wasn’t proof enough. I’m pretty sure he was shot in the back anyway.

The rest of the episode was dreadfully boring. The next part of the Ash Wolves’ dread plan requires some macguffin that Kumohira’s the best link to, so Yoite and Miharu go harass his girlfriend for information and to lie in wait for him. Then the act of cutting up dessert triggers some kind of horrible memory for Yoite (oh god, not another gay cake torture show) while Miharu takes the time to sniff Yoite’s scarf and flashes back to the last time he touched a woman. Then Yukimi shows up to rain on the parade.

So yeah, all bluster and yammering without actually going anywhere or doing much of anything. The whole meeting with whose-her-face could have been about 5 minutes shorter and we wouldn’t have missed out on anything. Likewise, Kouichi’s past was a few talking heads and a couple grainy black and white stills because the past didn’t have focus or color. Oh well, I expected it to be rather boring and it was. Kotarou is also up to something, probably through Raimei and Kumohira keeps giving her the evil eye, but it’ll probably end up being something dumb again. It can’t be any worse than Kotarou playing dating sims on his PSP while issuing orders though.

Oh right, there’s a new ED too, and it ups the yaoi ante quite a bit. I’m pretty sure that it’s mostly shots of ef, only with Miharu and Yoite instead of a heterosexual pairing.

Preview:

Raimei steals Yoite’s hat. Yoite vows revenge.

Observe the power of reusing frames!

    One!
    Two!
    Three!

  • Mint says:

Yay! J.C. Staff has finally started spewing out crap! And they’re covering it up by feeding us as much MiharuxYoite as possible. And it’s working. For the fangirls, at least.

J.C. Staff has finally started spewing out crap!

I blame it entirely on the source material.

  • ZOL says:

@Mint: I tip my hat to your words of wisdom /=weep

  • Anca says:

Don’t blame it on the source, considering that all the interesting scenes are from it and the boring filler stuff is the anime deviation.

    *weeps*

  • Twirble says:

I second that the source material is excellent. Hopefully they brought in some good writers for the original material because their track record is pretty poor.

  • Tokki says:

sigh,…I use to get exicited when this came on, but I now I’ll like ehhh,….

Maybe it’s because of the lack of action and the affection Yoite and Miharu have for each other. All I know is that’s I’m one of the few fangirls that don’t approve of yaoi. Or yaoi fan-fiction.

  • Alaena says:

(Hello! I am a random blog-stalker who, several days after discovering this blog, felt that she should reveal herself.)

Oddly enough, I’m not a fan of shounen-ai, yet I love this series to death. The characters are insanely varied and completely lovable. Except for one, whom I despise with all my being. But that’s okay, too.

Also, I love your summaries. My mom is wondering why I’m cracking up over here all the time.

This episode, admittedly, didn’t have any major plot WHOA moments, but it was kind of cool to see the characters laze around a bit. And half of the episode was anime-original filler. Rawr.

  • Aroduc says:

Tokki, I’m more or less the same at this point, but Sundays are so lame and boring that I’m just watching it more or less out of habit at this point.

And I’m not about to lay it all on JCStaff deviating at all (though I haven’t read the manga past about the 3rd chapter), but from talking with others, I’ve more or less got the impression that the central story from start to finish was supposed to be about Yoite and Miharu.

  • Ex says:

Is it just me, or did the Manga seem a lot less shounen-ai’ishy.
In fact in the manga it didn’t make Roku seem so very gay for kira

  • Alaena says:

@ Ex: Lol, there are certainly hints in the manga (must feed the fangirls) but in the anime it seems to be more blatant. Especially with the way that some of the characters’ lines were presented, though those may have been directly quoted from the manga, but mistranslated.

  • Mint says:

I thought the anime and manga were on about the same level of slashyness until this new ending theme appeared. Well, there’s chapter 47 too… I wonder if that’ll be animated? The scenes from the new ED certainly make it seem like it.
-shot for too much focus on the manga-

  • ZOL says:

@Ex:.. which manga were you reading ? ‘cuz as far as I’m concerned the manga >>> the anime in term of gayness. At least until this new ED..

  • Ex says:

@ZOL: Really? hm well i guess reading the gay is very much different from watching and hearing the gay.

Truth be told, it wasnt untill the anime started that i started noticing that roku wanted to be more then just good friends with Kira.

  • Geena says:

Yoite makes Miharu care for someone besides himself, but I doubt this will turn into a Yaoi make-out extravaganza. (although I’d like that)

On an absolutely unrelated note, if a hermaphrodite fell in love, would that couple be considered “gay”?
