Nogizaka Haruka’s Secret #01 — WHAT A TWIST!

July 11th, 2008

I never expected this show to be like this!

Impressions:

Oh hey. Mamiko Noto playing a demure girl in a fanservice show. What a freakin’ shock and a surprise. Never have I ever seen anything like this. This is a totally new direction for her and the kind of characters that she’s completely typecast as. It’s so very very totally different from last season when she was a demure guy in a fanservice show.

At least the show isn’t breaking form in any way. Every single event in the show can be checked off from the Big Book of Romantic Comedy Cliches. Male surrounded by sisters who drink heavily and wear very few clothes? Check. Male who has sworn off women as trouble? Check. Male with otaku friends? Check. Entire school obsessed with female lead? Check. Female lead has her own Imperial Guard? Check. Female lead manages to bump into the male, knock him over and expose herself and her secret (she likes bad anime… WHAT A TWIST!) to him within 5 seconds of meeting him and him going "I SAW NOTHING!"? Check. Female clings to male’s arm, shoving his arm between her boobs? "I don’t mind your interests! You’re okay as you are!"? Check! "Please just call me Haruka!"? Check.

It’s like watching Tokimemo again, only with a little more fanservice and a maid dance party at the end of the episode.

I’m sure I missed some cliches, but I think I got the point across. I guess it’s alright if you’re into those things and want yet another fanservicey romantic comedy. The OP and ED are actually pretty nice. I’m sure a certain someone is going to have a conniption over the maid dance party ED. The production values in general are decent, but nothing to write home about. Nothing that irritated me or that I’d feel good about mocking at any rate. For at least this season though, I’m completely burned out on bad romantic comedies and with a plethora of shows filled with action instead of terrible cliches, I’d so much rather keep up with those. Maybe try bothering Totali for this. He seems to have a much better stomach for romantic comedy drek than I, or at least, he’s somehow managed to watch a full season of To Love-Ru. Then again, that may not qualify him as alive anymore.

The sad part is, for me, that’s a solid recommendation. But then again I think I only liked that anime for external reasons … well, if a Mina-equivalent or an equally broad side cast shows up here, then I’m on board.

Dance in a ED? Why do I feel that a certain someone gonna whine whine whine bitch bitch bitch about dances in openings and endings again?
