2008 Summer Week One Wrapup and Clambake

July 8th, 2008

 Feelin’ hot hot hot.

Alright, everything’s aired except for Nogizaki Haruka and Blade of the Immortal, neither of which I’m particularly looking forward to, but otherwise, lots and lots of pretty good looking new shows. I think we finally got a cluster of the more lighthearted action finally after being pretty much devoid of it for the past few seasons. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that it’ll burn itself out and be completely gone again in six months, but at least for now, it should be good times.

If there’s something that I don’t cover, I suggest hitting up Totali, Hinano or Omni to fill in the gaps, but I still maintain that I’m the prettiest of us four. Anything I plan on covering for at least a week or two to come gets a little crown, though it’s not the be-all end-all for that, just what I’ve enjoyed the most. Every show also gets a one sentence blurb designed to reduce a complex 20 minute show to a quarter second bulletpoint and infuriate as many people as possible without just calling it the same as some other show. I also included the carry-overs from what I’ve been covering from the spring, though there aren’t a ton of those. Each title is a link to the longer writeup and more caps if you haven’t been keeping up. There’s still no substitute for coming to your own conclusion after all, so take it all with a grain of salt.

I have noticed that this season is a lot more divisive than normal on what is good and what’s not. It could just be people still wanting to pick fights after that industry/fansubs drama. Or maybe it’s just the galvanizing effect that shows like Sekirei and IkkiTousen tend to have on the blogosphere. Lots of people arguing pleases me though. At least, far more than hundreds of voices blindly clawing over each other to praise KyoAni’s next project at any rate.

If you’ve got any input, flames, propositions for me to pass along to my sister, or what-have-you, go wild.

Monday

 Mission-E

Possibly the best ‘sequel’/spinoff since Soul Taker spawned Komugi.

Natsume’s Book of Friends

When the most interesting characters on a show are all dead, there are issues.

World Destruction

The guy sucks, the girl wants to destroy the world, and they’re chaperoned by a teddy bear. Winning formula or what?

Tuesday

Koihime Musou

How can you even have the Ro3K without Liu Bei? That’s only the start of the issues here.

UltraViolet: Code 044

Just like stepping through a mirror and ending back in the pretentious and nonsensical mid 90s.

WEDNESDAY

 IkkiTousen ~ Great Guardians

Fewer lesbians! More angry Ryofu, dammit! Since the raw shows up so late, probably going to have to be bumped to Wednesday mornings.

 Sekirei

It’d take a winch to drag me away from a SevenArcs show. The martial arts and fanservice are just icing.

 Slayers REVOLUTION

The same goes for Slayers. If you’re leaving scorch marks, it’s because you haven’t hit it with a Dragon Slave yet.

Someday’s Dreamers ~ The Summer Sky ~

I can simulate watching this show by going outside and taking a nap.

THURSDAY

Antique Bakery

Yeah yeah, gays, cakes, gay cakes, demonic gays, demonic gay cakes… no.

 Hidamari Sketch x365

Hiro is the best girl, dammit, and nothing any of you might say can change that.

Strike Witches

My pants, just like the interest in this show… nonexistent. Or something like that.

FRIDAY

 Birdy the Mighty: DECODE

Killing the kid was an awesome way to kick this off. It’s just a shame he didn’t stay dead.

 Penguin Girl ♥

You are 8 minutes of sinfully low resolution laughter and fun every week, Pengy.

SATURDAY

 Absolutely Lovely Children

While still enjoyable, significantly less since we’ve moved to evil-psychic-of-the-week. Bring on PANDRA, dammit.

 Kyouran Kazoku Nikki

While I like to complain about it, every episode is still relatively funny. They just always leave me confused and exhausted.

Ryoko’s Case Files

Not bad, not great. In a day already packed with other entertainment, I doubt I’ll be watching this in any timely fashion though.

Telepathy Girl Ran

The first episode was a pleasant surprise. The second episode was just unpleasant all around.

JCSTAFFDAY

 The Ruler of Nabari

Well, at least it’s fun to mock this one, though the last two or three episodes have been picking up quite a bit.

Zero no Tsukaima ~ The Princesses’ Rondo ~

Same as it ever was! Same as it ever was! Maybe for mockery purposes depending on my mood.

The main strange thing is that Wendesdays actually have semi-decent shows on them for the first time since… man… I don’t even know… Nagasarete Airantou? Oh well, at least Tuesday and Thursdays are relatively light, keeping my ‘middle of the week’ coverage pretty stressless. Otherwise, pretty much everything that interests me is spread out across the entire week, so it should be a nice full and entertaining season for me.

And that’s the summer season in a nutshell.
