Kamen no Maid Guy #01 — It’s Saturday Night, And You Can’t Score
April 5th, 2008
Ha HA! Musician jokes.
Impressions:
Well… that was disappointing. I haven’t actually read it, so I wasn’t 100% sure what I was getting into aside from giant burly men in masks and maid dresses, but I wasn’t expecting ginormous pointed chins and relatively poor production values. The fanservice was also at least three or four notches higher than I was expecting. There was a breast bounce within the first 20 seconds and a fogged up shower scene in the first 90 or so and things more or less continued in that fashion throughout. I don’t think it managed to go a full two minutes without a breast shot or somebody reduced to panties. It might’ve been alright if they had been creative with it or if the art and animation had been better, but even compared to To Love-ru and Kanokon, the raw artistic quality here was rather lacking.
As long as we’re on the production values, the BGM was also rather obtrusive. It fit in parts, but orchestral fanfares and slapstick aren’t usual a good mix. There was also basically no cohesive style to it at all. Some things sounded like they came straight from a western, others I would have expected from Pirates of the Caribbean. A few times… like when Busty got beat up, the music turned downright irritating as hell. It’s the kind of music that would be in place in Earthbound’s Saturn Valley. Not to mention the random Phantom of the Opera riff played at maximum volume. Ouch.
The best parts of the episode were when the Doom Ninja Maids were wandering around causing various kinds of havoc, but it was still marred by the relatively crappy production values, and the music was simply horrendous. Every time I chuckled was almost immediately followed up by a groan at the obvious lack of budget. The rampant cheeseball fanservice also turned me off quite a bit too. It didn’t get as raunchy as Kanokon’s, but it was a never ending barrage through the entire show. You’ve got a giant masked man in a dress. Why the hell do you need to be shoving tits in the audience’s face? Work with your strengths here. Go with the wacky violence and the dog whistles… leave the T&A to shows with the budget to make it look good.
I’ll give it another episode or three, but I’m considerably less enthusiastic about this one than I was before and I mostly blame the music… man… painful like you wouldn’t believe.

I don’t blame ya, after half way I started to skip through the episode…couldn’t sit through it. I think after Hayate and KimiAru I’ve had enough of maid and butler shows. The heroine girl is pretty annoying too and the fanservice was an eyeroller. I didn’t even bother posting an impression about it because all I can say is “Not THIS again” for every aspect of the show.
