Song: Happy Happy Rice Shower — Kurobana Hozonkai
Comboing in Otome Crisis’ engine is often a trial of patience and general annoyance. The new slam mechanics mean that once you launch, if you use a strong attack, the next hit has to be a super or a projectile or they’ll slam into you (even if you whack them otherwise) and knock you over and out. That, quicker recovery time, the fact that basically nobody has an air-drop cancel except Imnity and Kaede, and the removal of the wall slam as a way to continue combos means that it’s just a hell of a lot harder to do anything really fancy without just spamming supers. Good for gameplay ‘balance’ and short power combos… not so much for showing fancy stuff off, which is a little strange because there are a relatively large number of infinite combos despite the relative lack of relaunchers. It’s especially frustrating when trying to do low to the ground combos. Hiiro, for example, has a basically infinite fA (j)fA jdB (which is what I started her combo in the vid with), but if you start it with her dA, which is a very short launch, then the second fA will slam against the ground despite her being one or two pixels above it and automatically hit Hiiro, ending it right then and there, which makes no sense at all really.
Anyway, goal #1 for the vid was to show off the new characters, and I hit all of them but two… and one of those is a giant slow mecha which I don’t think is comboable at all. Puffin was especially a pain in the ass because her attacks are pretty much all close range, slow, and not a single one provides any decent amount of time before the enemy can recover. Even her fishing line (jfB) doesn’t stun people, and the only reason her kancho super (fAB) even hit is because I did it in the corner. Her teleport for it normally whiffs on a moving target, making it basically worthless.
Goal #2 was to show off some of the neater team supers. I got to throw in Rea’s "TSUN BEEEAAAAAM" with Hiiro, and Lobelia/Kaede are two of my favorites. I also really love Imnity’s super with Mia, but I kind of hate using her, so she got passed over for Kaede’s nifty (at least to me) wall-slam into super uppercut into giant drill kick funtimes. Many of the rest of the team supers were really just mailed in. I mean, hell… Claire’s is just her butler grabbing/breaking the guard of the opponent before she does her normal fAB super.
Anyway, this is probably the last you’ll hear from me about Otome Crisis. I think I’ll stick to Xross Scramble when I get the urge to beat down people and things. The new engine is nice and all, but there’s no substitute for three times as many allies and enemies or an endless survival mode.
And back to working on BMW Act 3 I go.
