Winter Season First Episode Wrapup
January 9th, 2008
Alright, it’s not as bad as last season… but it’s still exhausting.
Well, everything’s out except for a handful of shows. Moegaku and Yatterman start next Monday, and while I’m sure Yatterman will be good for a few laughs, I can’t imagine sticking with it for more than a month or so. The new Precure and the strange (and short) run of Mnemosyune start in February, but that’s about it for the new season. Here’s the quick list of all the shows over the past week (plus the ongoing ones I’m already following) plus a short blurb designed to annoy as many people as possible… or something like that. Do try to remember that there really is no substitute for watching the show yourself and coming to your own opinion. These are not absolute declarations of quality or watchability, just my own personal opinions summed up succinctly after a single episode.
A lot of it is balanced between what I’ll be watching and what’s already being covered by half the blog-o-sphere. Saturday in particular is just an absolute morass of decent shows and I’m not sure how things will shake out there. I suggest Omni, Totali and Hinano to fill in most of the rest of what I don’t hit up (especially… say… Aria ^^;). The winner for the day gets a little crown. If you’ve got any input, flames, or desperate begging for something to be covered, go wild.
MONDAY
Gunslinger Girl
Winner by default! I kid. I’m still following Bamboo Blade, but Totali’s already got that well in hand. Anyway, yes yes, CHANGE… BAD! But I didn’t mind it all that much and it was still a pretty good first episode in its own right. I’ve got no problems sticking with this.
TUESDAY
AYAKASHI
Ultra violence on a budget even Ninomiya laughs at? Thank you, no.
Amazing Detective Labyrinth
Why am I paying attention to this again? Oh right, her.
Spice and Wolf
Start was a little slow for my tastes, but I see potential. Then again, I’m sure Omni’s got this covered, so maybe I’ll just do quickies and watch for more of Imagin’s true self leaking through.
Ultimate Survivor Kaiji
Kaiji needs to drag itself out of this godawful arc and go back to gambling. We get it. Japanese people apparently can’t walk in a straight line. Move on.
WEDNESDAY
Wow… nada. Unless you count Dragonaut. Absolutely nothing.
THURSDAY
H2O ~ Footprints in the Sand
It seems alright, but these types of shows are a taaaaad bit too overly melodramatic for my tastes. Certainly not soul rocking at any rate.
Rosario + Vampire
Oh Gonzo… what are you even doing these days? No. Hell no.
Shakugan no Shana II
Wow. After that mediocre to poor first 13 episodes did Shana remain triumphant on Thursdays? I guess I’m also still following Clannad, and let me tell you, I can’t wait for the horrible horrible Kyou arc… which I guess is why I’m sticking to Shana. At least Pheles has the potential to not suck.
FRIDAY
Hatenkou Yuugi
Oh ho! Something to watch on Fridays again. Hopefully future episodes will handle the pace a bit better. Rahzel’s a charismatic little imp though, so it should be fun.
SATURDAY
Kimikiss ~ Pure Rouge
The last two episodes have been too good for me to even think about dropping this.
Persona – Trinity Soul
Yawn. Yes yes, intrigue, spirits, city in peril. Now make it interesting. Please. Maybe if Saturday wasn’t a glut of greatness, this would have a chance.
Shigofumi
I wouldn’t mind covering this at all, though it’s not usually the type of show I watch. We’ll see where Omni and Totali fall on Saturdays. It’s definitely worth checking out. Excellent atmosphere, great storytelling, wonderful writing.
They Are My Noble Masters
If not for Shigofumi and Kimikiss, this would be a pretty easy shoe-in for at least a few weeks. Comic and a likeable cast, even if I can’t shake the feeling that it’s the maid version of Ryouzanpaku. Again, I’ll see what Omni and Totali want to do.
True Tears
Certainly better than H2O, but school girl melodrama and I have had a hands-off approach with eachother for longer than I care to remember.
Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
I really did plan to at least do short entires on this and foist people off onto Totali for the full deal, but with all the other great stuff on Saturdays, I’ll probably end up watching this later in the week anyway. More excellent SHAFT comedy at any rate.
SUNDAY
Kekkaishi
Like Kaiji, Kekkaishi has been spinning its wheels for almost two months. The plummet in production values and direction is just painful given what they used to be. Hopefully it’ll wrap up this arc and go back to being good.
Minami-ke Okawari
With only short Rental Magica entries on Sundays, I may pick this one up as well, just to spite Totali. Not quite the same comedy as its predecessor, but close enough for me to not mind… except for the freaky orbitting boobs. Those still creep me out.
Rental Magica
Still the same low key magical adventure show as ever. I’ll probably stick to the short entries since I feel really silly writing a lot for the subs to come out only an hour or two later, rendering my work nigh worthless. Ah well.
So, yeah… Saturday’s a mess and there’s absolutely nothing on Wednesdays at all. We’ll see how things pan out there and I’ll update my schedule probably next week. Enjoy the new season!
