Shigofumi #04 — Princess of Tennis
January 26th, 2008
Well, it’s a better title than Lesbian Mountain Retreat.
Impressions:
Let’s just start with saying that this was easily the weakest episode of Shigofumi so far. It was by no means poor, but the animation seemed like it wasn’t quite as sharp this week and the story was a little on the excessively melodramatic side. I’m also pretty sure that I don’t like Chiaki… or whatever her name is. I was happy with Fumika being the only undead postal worker in the show… we don’t need an entire troop of them. Hopefully she’ll be more interesting in future episodes since she’s apparently sticking around.
The episode is about Fumika’s attempt to deliver a letter to a girl (Dan? That’s not a girl’s name. Am I missing something here? Maybe it’s Ran… I think they’re rolling their ‘r’s a bit too much for no reason) from her mother, but she wants nothing to do with it. Eventually her lesbian lover convinces her to read it after she gets injured. Unfortunately, there’s a fire in the cabin where the girl is resting from a sprained ankle and she almost dies from the smoke. The letter gets read… and then we see her laying with her lover on a cliffside talking together.
Also of note, I was talking with Totali as I watched this episode, and he has a theory that Fumika will use ‘boku’ once and only once during an episode. I was all set to prove him wrong with this one… but then, at 20 minutes and 4 seconds… "Boku ja nai." I think we’ll have to haul out the boku-o-meter for future Shigofumi episodes. Or I’ll have to rewatch episodes 1-3 over the week just to double check his theory. It’s the right thing to do.
Preview:
People on cells, people sleeping, unamused albinos, and flying postal carriers.
