Shakugan no Shana II #13 — Best School Fair… Ever

January 10th, 2008

Women in leather, violence, and men in tears. What isn’t there to like?

Impressions:

The first half of this episode was off the walls awesome. See? I knew Pheles would bring the good stuff, at least for now. I contemplated ripping out parts, but it jumps all around and back and forth between the Pheles vs Shana fight and the Margery vs Wilhelmina fight constantly so it’d just be a jumbled mishmash. This is the kind of Shana that I adore. Granted, next episode seems to involve a lot of very sad Pheles, and flying Yoshida, but this episode earned Shana another couple weeks before I go back to mocking it and posting recipes of baking treats.

I’m not really sure what else to say above and beyond that. Margery went berserk, Pheles went berserk and that was basically the episode. Long on action, short on exposition, which is just the way I like it. Yeah, we learned a little more about the Reiji Maigo, but pfft. Nobody likes Yuji. They’re just after the Silver/Power/Man/Lolicon inside of him. I guess we got another ‘hint’ at the end that Konoe is more than she seems. Wow, will that ever be a shock when she’s revealed to be part of Bal Masque’s plot… or something. I think I’ll need to drink pretty heavily when that revelation comes around.

Whoops, starting to sink back into the Shana sarcasm. This episode was awesome. That’s all you need to know.

The Pheles tornado rages out of control as the Flame Hazes watch on helplessly. Inside it, Pheles lands near Prince Yuji and approaches. She steps in close, recognizing her ‘lover’ as Yuji panics. She leans in, and his power erupts out of him, forming the Silver Barrier.

The world freezes. Margery laughs insanely as she recognizes the color. She transforms into her bear form and gets ready to attack despite Marco yelling at her for to get it under control. She rushes to attack, but Wilhelmina stops her. She roars in anger, and throws Wilhelmina aside. Shana transforms into her Flame Haze form as well.

Pheles prepares to extract Johan, but Shana attacks, and slashes the energy between Pheles and Yuji. She throws Yuji aside and gets ready to fight Pheles. Pheles’ shoulder pads open and suck the tornado in.

She then launches it at Shana. Shana tries to fly through it, but Pheles appears in front of her and slams her to the ground.

Pheles follows the attack, knocking Shana around some more. Shana tries to counterattack, but Pheles is too fast. Margery’s crones are unsealed and wandering in the school, along with Yoshida. Margery’s berserk rage crashes through the school. They barely dodge, but a ton of students have debris and shards of glass pushed through them.

They decide to stay out of the way of the fight since they have no clue what’s going on, but they see the yellow tornado and realize it’s important.

Wilhelmina finally fully transforms as she fights Margery. Eita rushes to stop them, and notices Ogata directly in the middle of the fight right before Margery incinerates her. Eita screams as Ogata falls, very badly burned and injured. Sato tries to calm him down, but Eita just gets more panicked.

Shana and Pheles keep fighting, a little more evenly. Margery attempts to kill Yuji, but his flame suppressing ring protects him. Pheles interrupts too, refusing to let Johan die.

Shana and Wilhelmina jump in on either side of Yuji and attack their foes. Shana knocks Pheles into Margery and then Wilhelmina binds them both. Shana knocks out Margery with a kick and the fight ends. Wilhelmina tells them to listen to their story.

Sato jerks them out of the happy times and yells at Yuji and Margery for their behavior, putting everybody at risk.

Margery chews at the bonds, but finally calms down when Eiji tearfully tells her to stop and demands to know why she ‘killed’ Ogata and the others. They realize everything that Margery has been through, but this kind of destruction is unforgiveable.

Margery finally calms down enough and reverts while Marco continues. Wilhelmina’s bonds on her dissolve. Margery gets up and asks if Yuji is a Crimson Denizen… and if he’s the Silver. They don’t know. Margery attacks Yuji again, but the flames don’t affect him and Margery leaves.

Wilhelmina tends to Pheles, still bound. They talk of the Mystes Johan and the Reiji Maigo. Pheles tells her that she’s been fighting to find it all this time, ever since another Crimson Denizen took it from her. She saved Johan by sealing him in the Reiji Maigo instead of letting him die, but -something- happened as it disappeared to the next holder. Wilhelmina isn’t exactly sure what happened, but can’t let Pheles have it.

Wilhelmina releases Pheles, telling the others that Pheles can be trusted. Shana agrees, but Yuji is still vaguely horrified that Johan is inside the Engage Link (Ring? whatever) inside him.

Margery contemplates events. Wilhelmina shows up with a sleeping Pheles to explain things to Margery. Pheles thinks that there’s something wrong with the Reiji Maigo too if it’s that color. The two talk a bit more and Margery thinks back to Remy and her personal bias against the Crimson Denizens.

Below them, Shana waves upwards. Wilhelmina deploys her ribbons to start rebuilding the disaster they caused. Margery takes hold of the ribbons, thinking about Eita and Sato and says that she’ll grant her powers too. Yuji will be using his powers through the ribbons with the Hazes directing it to rebuild as much as possible. Margery starts drawing from Yuji and rebuilding the structures.

The contest ends successfully, everything rebuilt. Ike collapses on the grass. Yoshida and Yuji talk a little bit. She thanks him for always doing his best. Eita sulks in a corner, almost in tears. Ogata comes up to him and he hugs her, tearfully explaiming how happy he is that she’s alright. She’s stunned, but hugs him back. Shana takes victory photos. Yoshida and Yuji congratulate her.

Pheles and Wilhelmina stand together watching events. Konoe and her butler also stand together while Konoe wordlessly mouths something.

Preview:
Flying Yoshida, Wilhelmina contemplates the things she could do to a sleeping Pheles, and lots of talk about Johan.

  • Tokkan says:

… That’s why Konoe was introduced… It was to explain THAT, how that HAPPENS. Now I know she’s not completely filler, she’s an extension of the novel events. In any case, she ain’t lasting more this arc and will disappear after it.

  • Totali says:

Pheles wants stuff to come out of Yuuji……silver splurge everywhere…..then there’s Margery in bondage and Wilhelmina x Pheles. Ah, Shana~.

Seeing Konoe’s face at the end almost made me stop liking this episode….but then I realized that just wasn’t possible.

  • pokuiom says:

So… is Ogata a Torch now?

  • Aroduc says:

Nah. People can survive being stabbed, burned, blown away etc while in the field so long as enough Existence is around to repair the damage (time is stopped after all). It’s only when a Denizen eats their existence that they become a Torch.

  • Totali says:

Actually they killed Matake off because the writers were on strike. =)

  • sage says:

Why is there a wall of sperm when Yuji uses his Fuzetsu?

  • […] Totali expected it to be funny (funny as in ‘weird’ or ‘LOL’?). [Also see Aroduc and Omni for screencaps and […]
