Rental Magica #14 — Cat Scratch Fever

Nekoyashiki is a manly man!

Impressions:

Hooray! The long overdue Nekoyashiki episode. I have to admit that it’s not nearly as interesting as I had expected it to be. I do blame a fair bit of that on Sakuya and Kei for being fairly boring. It certainly didn’t help when they spent about three minutes standing in a circle doing exposition. At least we got a nice long and well done fight scene out of it. I am a little disappointed that Nekoyashiki didn’t use his cats for any of the fighting… not even to fight off the evil mongeese that Kei summoned, but eh… what can you do?

Anyway, Nekoyashiki’s past catches up to him and he finishes his Fehde with the dying Kei. We also get to see that Mikan and Nekoyashiki have at least something of a past together, as he’s the one that rescued her and brought her to Astral. Aside from the tedious exposition in parts (especially from about minutes 12-15), I’m happy with this episode though. Nekoyashiki got to kick some tail, and despite hanging around for most of the episode, Mikan didn’t chatter on in her chirpy voice. Sure, it could have used more Kuroha, but what couldn’t?

I’m pretty sure those that Kei summoned aren’t mongeese. They are the kind of fox that live in tubes like the one in xxxholic.

The story has been toned down a notched. In the novel, the Star Festival was sabotaged by Sakuya’s father because he feels that only Nekoyashiki is strong enough to be his successor.
