Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino- #02 — Lifelike Dolls
January 14th, 2008
Other ways to raise a devoted assassin.
Impressions:
As expected with the shift in style back to the manga, this followed the introduction to Pinocchio very closely, starting with his early mission where he ends up taking down an innocent that saw him (which parallels back to Rico doing the same early in the first season) and up to him signing up with Franca and Franco (the master bombers of the PRF). I always liked Franca and Franco since they’re about the only really fleshed out and charismatic of the PRF members, but Pinocchio’s whole arc should be fun too, especially his fights with Trie… alright… I’ll be nice with the spoilers.
The art and animation quality stayed more or less the same this episode as last, so if you’re looking for the same experience as the first Gunslinger Girl, you may as well hug your DVDs and weep softly. It’s doing a perfectly fine job of adapting the manga though, so I’m still pleased, though a bit underwhelmed. How they handle the upcoming alluded-to fun will be the true test in my book. It did seem a little more stylish this episode, but that could just be because there wasn’t really any action to speak of. Pinocchio and Triela will provide that soon enough hopefully.

Considering how ADV actually stepped up with the releases on Gunslinger up to volume 6 recently, it’s probably not too much of a spoiler for those who’ve been keeping up with the English version. Can’t really say shit about ADV’s manga division as much anymore, well except for stuff like Matantei Loki Ragnarok and Maburaho. I’ll probably not be reading anymore of that until I can read Japanese.
Despite the change in style from last season, it should still be as enjoyable.
