Kekkaishi #31 — Gen vs Yoshimori

Gen’s tragic past… revealed!
Impressions:
We’re apparently into the Gen story portion of Kekkaishi. So much for my silent badass Gen. We also got a new ED this week, which has possibly the worst ending to an ED ever. I still miss the Caribbean themed ED. It wasn’t that bad an episode, but there wasn’t much going on either. Next week, we get another comic relief Gen episode as his Urukai master, the very busty monster trainer Atora, checks up on him.
Summary:
After telling Yoshi that Gen tried to kill his family, Yoshi demands to know what he’s talking about. Masamori starts narrating a long flashback.
Gen has climbed up a tree and is refusing to come down while his sister, Ryo is yelling up at him. He eventually tells her to go away, but she climbs right up the tree to drag him down by force.
Ryo continues chewing out Gen on the ground as they walk home. She notices that he has stopped walking, and holds out her hand to go with her. He refuses to take it, so she grabs his hand and the two continue walking. She says that he’s a good boy, but he takes a mudball to the back of the head, thrown by a pair of kids. She yells at them, but they throw more mud at her. When the balls hit her, Gen snaps, and throws a huge rock at them, narrowly missing.
The bullies run away, but Gen has completely lost it. He’s totally possessed and saying how he’s going to kill them while his hand has assumed its demonic form. Ryo grabs his arm and he snaps out of it with no memory of what he was doing.
Later that night, Gen is upstairs while Ryo asks their father about what happened to Gen. Their father says that Gen is a monster and that it’s something he inherited from his mother. There’s nothing that anybody can do and the best thing would be to just forget about him. Ryo remembers seeing Gen’s demon arm and says to herself “so that’s how it is.” Gen overhears this, and completely loses it, leaping out of the house. Whose-his-face… his Urukai ‘keeper’ (oh right… Hiba) sees the explosion in the distance.
After a skip, Hiba is reporting in to his masters that the culprit is Shishio Gen. As it zooms out, we see him heavily wounded and covered in blood. Gen is in his complete demon form and racing through the words, randomly destroying trees as he thinks about his sister promising to always protect him. He also remembers the guy he just fought, sprouting tentacles and saying that they’re the same. He looks at his hands as he thinks of being a monster and yells out.
Hiba is looking a bit better, but still just tracking Gen from a distance. Masamori comes up behind him and after a quick report, uses his black fish to scout the area. As the fish reports, he realizes that this is dangerous and immediately runs off.
Elsewhere, Ryo is looking for Gen as she remembers the times that she said she’d protect him. She apologizes to Gen in her mind over and over again and eventually comes to the same tree Gen was in earlier. She starts calling to Gen and apologizes and saying that she wants him to come home. Gen’s roaring and yelling comes in response, so she starts to climb the tree. Suddenly something flies past. She yells at Gen, but then a spray of blood and Gen’s demon hand is covered in it. Masamori arrives soon after and uses his shiki to cover up Ryo’s wounds, but she’s still mumbling about how sorry she is.
Gen continues rampaging through the forest until he’s suddenly sealed in a barrier. He immediately destroys it and demands to know who Masamori’s name. He yells that he hates all humans. Gen attacks him, but Masamori uses his multi-barrier technique to dull the blow. Gen manages to slice through them all anyway and scratch Masamori. Gen attacks again, but Masamori uses his aura barrier this time and blasts Gen away. He thinks to himself that dying is for the best.
The next day, Gen wakes up under the care of Masamori. Gen immediately tries to transform and attack again, but can’t call out the power. Masamori asks him if he can remember what he did last night. Gen recalls attacking his sister and slouches back down. Masamori invites him to come with him and learn how to use and control his power so that he won’t harm others.
He tosses him an Urukai robe and then opens the door to the next room to show a room full of Urukai people throwing a welcoming party. Masamori says that it’s a group for people like him who are not human and formally welcomes him to the Urukai.
Flashback finally concluded, Yoshi asks Masamori what he should do. Masamori doesn’t have an answer for him, but says that Yoshi should know what to do. The next morning, Masamori is heading back out, his work repairing the heterosexual love between Gen and Yoshi complete.
That night, Gen is still moping around about his mission and heading out. At Karasumori, Tokine has heard the whole story from Yoshi, but she doesn’t really know what to do either. Gen is sitting in a tree somewhere on the campus thinking about Masamori when Yoshi comes up and stammers through asking him to come down and talk to him. Tokine takes over and just yells straight up that Yoshi wants to talk to him. Gen misunderstands and takes off.
Yoshi and Tokine start chasing him. Yoshi yells ahead that he’s not scared of him, which makes Gen stop. Yoshi then continues, saying that Masamori says that he told him about Gen attacking his sister. Gen gets a bit pissed off by this and starts attacking him. Yoshi keeps dodging using barriers but Gen just slices through them. Yoshi finally grabs Gen’s leg with a barrier, stopping his movement and then creates a ton of small barriers at his joints, stopping his movement entirely.
Gen finally forced to listen, Yoshi yells at him that he knows Gen won’t hurt or kill him. Gen loses it again and breaks all of Yoshi’s barriers at once and then attacks while Yoshi stands motionless. Gen stops just short, his claws at Yoshi’s throat. Yoshi pushes his hand down saying that the two are the same. Gen relents and reverts his arm to normal. Tokine comes up saying that they’re all fighting together.
Hiba interrupts the bonding session and says that that he has official business. Yoshi and Tokine try to stop him, but he walks in, points his finger and declares that Gen has earned a promotion. Everybody’s a bit stunned, but Gen humbly thanks Kiba for the honor. Yoshi and Tokine congratulate him… though it stops pretty quickly once Tokine points out the destruction they caused in their little scuffle.
