Mononoke #01 — Priestesses Need Not Apply

July 12th, 2007

I really am too unrefined to deal with this show.

Impressions:

This is the continuation/spinoff of Ayakashi. It was a show I could never really get into, and Mononoke is pretty much the same. There’s a lot you can appreciate about it, especially if you’re an art student or familiar with Japanese mythology, but I’m not really particularly in touch with either. It certainly wasn’t a bad episode, but the show just remains outside my sphere of interest. If you liked Ayakashi, I’m almost certain you’ll love this as well.

2 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

The art style is reminiscent of wood-cutting. Not unlike Gankutsuou but definately more of a watercolor feel. While I like the aesthetic divergence, it seems too colorful (i.e. too much visual information) for me to focus my attention on any one thing.

I hope this gets subbed soon, the 3rd arc of Ayakashi it’s based on was great
