Kekkaishi #28 — Big Trouble in Little Karasumori
July 10th, 2007
Seriously. Screw Pizza Hut. Whatever Sunrise has been getting from McDonald’s is far better.
Impressions:
Slick slick episode. Kaguro makes a great villain and even though the OP made it pretty obvious that he was going to be paired off against Gen, it was pretty nice to see Gen taken down so effortlessly finally. It’ll give him a nice villain to overcome. The preview for next week was also 100% action scenes, so awesomeness upcoming as well. I think there was some kind of Conan crossover that aired right after this too. How strange.
Summary:
Yoshi wakes up that morning to a shikigami tapping on his window. He rushes downstairs, and his grandfather says that he needs to talk to him. Shige tells Yoshi about Masamori joining the inner circle of the Urakai. Yoshi wonders aloud what the Yukimura think of this, but Shige tells him that the Yukimura have nothing to do with it, and that Yoshi needs to start being extra careful.
Over at Kokuboro HQ, Aihi is reporting to Byaku about the human skins they’re developing. Most are still fairly limited and can only be used for a short time, but research is continuing apace. They’re ready to deploy them for a real trial. Aihi uses them on a set of Ayakashi and provides them pants, ties, and other clothes. Kaguro also wears a human skin (the original MIB one) to lead the group.
Back at school, Yoshi is enjoying some naptime alone on the roof and thinking about the relationship between the Sumimuras and the Yukimuras. Most of his thoughts of Tokine involve her either yelling at her or her rescuing him from some disaster until he remembers a time that she brought him sparklers and they played together. His happy memory is ruined by his heterosexual sleeping partner showing up and staring at him daydreaming.
The Kokuboro ayakashi are wandering around town, getting used to their forms and commenting on how strange humans are. The fivesome finally wanders into Karasumori and takes over the school’s PA and announces themselves as the Kokuboro and says that “they’ll have a meeting at the usual time,” but Yoshi, Gen and Tokine are already rushing at them.
The three meet up as the Kokuboro are leaving the courtyard, but can’t do anything at the moment because of how public everything is. The Kokuboro leave the school and go hang out in a playground, waiting for nightfall to attack. Yoshi and crew discuss their plans for the night and think about how dangerous it’s going to be and how they probably shouldn’t involve others.
That night, Yoshi turns down the meal from his father and heads out. Tokine and Gen are waiting for him right outside the courtyard. All three are already on edge. The Kokuboro on the other hand, are setting up desks and chairs to sit on for their little parley, though haven’t quite gotten the hang of what things are for. One of them has even found the principles’ chair for Kaguro.
The good guys are a little confused by these developments, though Kaguro forces his cronies to officially introduce the group. There’s a bit of infighting among the demons as they’re mostly pretty dumb, but they eventually get across the message for the Kekkaishi to welcome Kokuboro to Karasumori and that they don’t hate humans, they just want the power of Karsumori for their uses.
Kaguro reaches into his pocket during this, and Gen rushes him. Kaguro is faster though, and slashes Gen’s shoulder open using blades from his palm. Kaguro picks up the pieces of blade from his pocket and throws them at the two dogs, dispelling them. He then lifts up the chair and tosses it up to the roof. He then sits down to watch. Yoshi’s ready to fight, but Tokine points out that Kaguro put his sunglasses on Yoshi’s staff during that move and he’s extremely dangerous.
Yoshi heads off to attack, and the other Kokuboro members take flight, carrying Gen with them. Rocks start falling at Yoshi and Tokine, and we see that one of the Kokuboro members is throwing them. They’re eventually hearded into a square with sealed blocks on four corners which seal their powers. Tokine and Yoshi try to get out of the circle, but they’re blocked by the tentacle monster one and the Kokuboro members go back to throwing rocks and trees at them.
Tokine tells him that they have one chance and tells him to follow her lead. She rushes forward to distract them and uses kunai to keep their interest, but her robe is pinned to the ground and Yoshi is forced to protect her. She calls him stupid, but he grabs her arm and says that he’s not going to let anybody else get injured because of him and he has his own plan on how to get out of here.
The two take off running in opposite directions, but then turn back towards eachother and Yoshi launching Tokine straight up. CLIFFHANGER.
