History’s Strongest Disciple Kenichi #40 — 20 Minutes of Flashbacks

July 22nd, 2007

I hope you really like flashbacks.

Impressions:

Well, I’m glad that this follows Aroduc’s Third Law of Anime: “Incest in Anime.” Everybody is eventually either related to everybody else, or grew up together. To the surprise of nobody, because of the OP, turns out that Miu, Odin (Ryuuto), and Kenichi grew up together and Kenichi got his pin from them. Whoopie doo. There, I just saved you 24 boring minutes of flashbacks and 20 minutes of hearing about four different versions of the original opening theme. Bleh. At least there’s fighting next week, though I don’t think I could stand another flashback laden monstrosity.

Summary:

Tanimoto is heading to class with Kenichi and Miu in tow. He yells at them to back off, but they keep bugging him. He tells them that the three strongest of Ragnarok still remain, Odin, Berserker and Freya. He’s also still worried about Kensei who he reveals is Odin’s personal master, though does say that Kenichi’s own masters are as fearsome.

After school, Kenichi is flipping out because his yin-yang pin is missing after his clothes were washed. We see the mouse with it, who then throws it, chases after it, and sky surfs on it before Shigure grabs him and makes him return it. The mouse eventually gets a tiny bicycle in exchange for giving back the pin.

Miu says how important the pin must be to him and the two start thinking about their youth while Kenichi is out on his daily walk. Hearing him drag the chains around is irritating like you wouldn’t believe. Eventually, Kenichi remembers that Odin said that they had a promise together, but Kenichi can’t remember anything. He thinks that it might have to do with his pin, but Miu interrupts and wants to go on a tour to relive their youths, so takes off the weights and they head out.

As they look around the town, Kenichi and Miu remember doing various things around town until they find a park that Kenichi vividly remembers playing in with Miu. The store that they used to visit is also there, and Miu shows Kenichi a cat pin that she says she got from Kenichi.

We then get to go into a flashback where Kenichi remembers giving her the pin because she was crying in front of a gatchapon machine. More flashbacks to the first episode later and we see Miu figuring out immediately that Kenichi was the boy from her past. As they’re deep in memory, Odin walks up and remarks on how nostalgic it is.

Kenichi immediately gets ready for a fight while Miu thinks about how much of a warrior he’s become. Odin says that he’s not there to fight though, and Kenichi drops his stance and starts chumming it up with Odin. Odin asks about his parents and how he’s been, and Kenichi, a bit slow in the head, still doesn’t realize that what’s going on. Odin says once again that he better remember the promise they made about the buttons.

Kenichi is clueless as always. Odin asks Kenichi if he remembers his name, but Kenichi is clueless. This pisses off Odin, so he buys a bag of candy and his special way of opening a candybar reminds Kenichi that Odin was another friend he used to play with. The two wax nostalgic for awhile long until Kenichi finally remembers that they got the cat pin from the gatchapon machine while Miu got a yin-yang pin, and ended up giving her the cat pin and getting the other in return.

That memory over, Kenichi still doesn’t remember the promise to Odin, so the flashbacks keep coming. The old lady who ran the store was being harassed by thugs until loli Miu stepped in and beat them all up. After all that, Kenichi blurts out the name of the girl in their past… Fuuringi Miu. Odin realizes that she’s the girl with them. He gets up to leave, but Kenichi tries to talk him out of the Ragnarok gangs.

Odin tells him that Kenichi doesn’t know what he’s talking about and doesn’t understand Ragnarok’s purpose at all. He then pulls on his 1st Fist Glove and tells Kenichi that he’ll make sure that their promise gets fulfilled. No fighting until next week though.

5 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • Saku says:

Hmm thanks from saving me from torture.

  • Some Loser Kenichi Fan says:

Odin’s real name is Asamiya Ryuuto.
    Ken(ichi) vs Ryu(uto).

Also, to think that all of Kenichi’s troubles stem from that cheap 25¢ badge he wears all the time.

If you don’t like Kenichi, then don’t watch it. This episode has a lot of meaning to the end of the arc, and although some of it’s kind of corny, it doesn’t make it bad. The battles in Kenichi are badass, but there’s more to it than that.

  • Aroduc says:

Nah, I enjoy most episodes. This one just dragged on and on and on for no real point. Short on humor, short on action, heavy emphasis on rewriting the past history between characters all equals low on my quality scale.
