Nagasarete Airantou #13 – Happy Birthday, Tonkatsu!

Who makes a cake for a pig?

Impressions:

The pacing of this episode was really really fucked up. It kept seeming like the whole “Ikuto’s girlfriend” joke was just about over, but there was still about 10 minutes of episode left. All that said, the closing moment at the end of the episode was really cute and the first big step forward for Ikuto and Suzu and Ayane did a good enough job of filling the time to get there with her runaway imagination. Who knows, maybe he will choose by the end of the series. And next week is finally our introduction the last lovely lady of the island, Mei Mei. Definitely should be fun.

Special Tonkatsu ED

Summary:

Suzu is making something using a variety of pig shaped jars when Ikuto comes in. She freaks out and pulls him in and slams the door behind him. She asks if Tonkatsu followed him, and when he asks why, it’s because she’s working on a special gift for him for his birthday.

In the episode proper, Tonkatsu is being corralled by a chicken and kept away from Suzu. Ikuto meanwhile is looking at a photo of a girl clinging to him and thinking about birthdays. Suzu’s latest attempt at a Tonkatsu shaped tofu-cake collapses as well.

Ayane comes over with a gift/trap of spiked mame daifuku, which Suzu somehow manages to resist. In the fuss, Suzu finds the photo Ikuto was sighing over. Ayane immediately assumes that it’s his long lost lover that he misses and wants to come to the island, and when they find Ikuto staring out at the sea, Ayane declares herself to be right.

Later, Suzu is delivering invitations to Tonkatsu’s birthday party while Ayane follows along with her own story of Ikuto’s ‘girlfriend.’ Rin, Yukino and Chikage overhear the exchange and immediately hatch their own plans to use the information their advantage.

Suzu is back to the kitchen, but Ayane has transformed into a prim and proper cute girl to comfort Ikuto. Rin stops her from going forward, and has her own food to comfort Ikuto. Joining the party is also Chikage, having decided that bloomers and nekomimi are the height of fashion, and Yukino, terrifyingly covered with makeup to make her look more like an adult.

Team Ikuto-Seduction charges into Suzu’s house, but Ikuto’s not there. Instead they find something saying that he’s planning to go to the sea. Suzu runs to the coast, just in time to see Ikuto push off in his little boat. She grabs some seaweed (or a green cloth or something), lassos his boat and pulls him back.

She then beats him for trying something so dangerous and leaving her behind, etc etc, but he shows her a bottle with a message in it saying he just wanted to send that. Having resolved their little spat, the rest of the gang arrives with their attempts to seduce him, only for him to end up traumatized by the attention. Mostly though, it’s scary scary Yukino causing him to swear off women for life.

They let slip that they think that the girl in the photo, Misaki, is his girlfriend. He fills them in that it’s actually his sister, but nobody’s really fazed much. Chikage calls them over that whatever Ikuto was cooking is finished. He was using his elite science cooking knowledge to make a more stable tofu for Tonkatsu’s pseudo-cake.

The big ‘surprise’ for a pig with the IQ in the single digits finally finished, Tonkatsu is freed from his chicken coop and allowed back into the house as everybody wishes him a happy birthday. Machi finally makes her appearance in the episode, placing her exorcist candles on Tonkatsu’s cake. As they’re going through the food, Suzu finally gets around to eating the spiked mame daifuku, but is unaffected. Ayane tries giving them to Machi instead, who is affected by the hotness and inflicts her wrath on Ayane.

We then get a special Tonkatsu sung ED. I worry that they’ll actually make a character album for him.

After that fearful little jaunt with the surreal, we see Ikuto and Suzu talking about sending his bottle off and how Ikuto feels bad for missing his sister’s birthday. Suzu calls the whale and brings them to the edge of the whirlpools. Ikuto is a bit worried that it won’t make it, so instead of using her rocket arm herself, Suzu smiles for him and tells him that it’s impossible with a wink to try to get him motivated. At first, the bottle looks like it won’t make it, but then it drifts out. The two hug, blush, and then hold hands as the episode fades to back.
