Kekkaishi #24

June 8th, 2007

I understand your pain, Aoi. I too suffer from an unrequited crush on Gen.

Impressions:

A ton of cute Yuri scenes, some good humor and a very nicely done fight scene to top it off. This really is why I love Kekkaishi. This episode also had a new ED, which while not as irritating as the first one’s whining, is still pretty annoying. I already miss the Jamaican stylings of the second ED.

By the by, Kekkaishi is taking another one week hiatus (man… it’s constant with this show…) and will be back the week after, though with the haphazard raw release schedule… well… let’s just say that this raw didn’t appear until about 5 days after it aired. *sigh*

Summary:

Yurina is walking her friend Aoi home late one evening when she sees Gen doing his Tick routine and leaping from rooftop to rooftop. He sees them, but keeps going. Yuri is scared by it, but the other girl is entranced. Yoshi is meanwhile fighting a giant angry warthog. Gen leaps from above and slashes its belly open, finishing it off and saving Yoshi’s bacon.

The next morning, we get to see Gen heading off to school, complete with his healthy McDonald’s breakfast. He notices an abandoned puppy in a box and feeds it some of his McGriddle while Aoi watches. Later at school, Aoi tells Yurina’s trio about Gen and how amazing she thinks that he is while Yurina, knowing about his evil aura keeps trying to dissuade her and comes off as more than a little crazy. Aoi doesn’t even care because she’s convinced herself that Gen is a ninja.

Yurina tries to ask Yoshi about Gen, but he’s not paying attention to anything really and is sulking. Later, Yuri’s friends are trying to get Yurina to confess to Yoshi, and she says that she’s too afraid. They also say that they’re going to hook up Aoi and Gen.

Yurina tracks down Yoshi to talk to him about Gen, and he’s still cranky about the previous night, so he immediately starts ranting about how evil Gen is. Yurina spills the beans about Aoi liking Gen, but Yoshi really has no clue who she is. Yurina trots off, only to see her friends’ first attempts to get Gen to notice Aoi, but he ignores them and continues onward.

Yurina is hanging out with Aoi later and has picked up the puppy that Gen fed earlier. Yurina tries again to talk Aoi out of liking Gen, but she’s still convinced that he’s a lonely warrior ninja and Yuri’s out of luck.

That night, Yoshi is suiting up and still trying to figure out who Aoi is. Gen is hanging out at the school and receives a check-in call from Masamori. He fills in doofy on the recent happenings, including Yoshi’s growth and what the wheel demon let slip about Karasumori being targetted.

A weasel demon enters the school and Gen immediately rushes to attack, only to immediately be covered in sticky goo and then has a giant iron bell dropped on him. It sends a swarm of demons at the kekkaishi, but they immediately slaughter them. He then creates a smoke screen and uses that to launch an attack which slices through their barriers easily.

The two retreat to the top of the school to regroup where Tokine tells Yoshi she has a plan and that they need to save Gen. Yoshi heads back to the attack and the demon attacks Gen in the bell. Tokine has knocked out the ground from under the bell though and rescues Gen in the nick of time.

The three continue their attacks in concert now and manage to distract the demon and knock it off its feet long enough for Gen to get a clean hit on it, knocking it out.

The next day, Aoi is giving a sketch she did of Gen to him, but he brushes her off and just walks away. Aoi isn’t put off though, because he’s a ninja! It’s funny how that answers every possible question you could have about Gen.

The episode ends with Yoshi and Gen settling in for their heterosexual man-naps on the roof. Yoshi tells Gen that he should be nicer to Aoi, and Gen responds by saying that he doesn’t want to hurt her.
