Shinkyouku Soukai Polyphonica #1

April 3rd, 2007

So, here’s a great example of where expectations rule over everything else. We join our Flame Haired Goddess in a musical themed fantasy adventure.

Plus a transforming orchestral motorcycle.

Whereas I was expecting seriousness and no tachikoma tanks out of Wellber, I really had few expectations for Polyphonica, and wasn’t even going to mention watching it really. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed just sitting back and taking in the episode. While the atmosphere for Claymore was pretty jarring and overall unpleasant (and why I didn’t blog it) and Wellber kept doing strange and confusing things, Polyphonica was pretty much exactly as advertised, and that in itself ends up being strangely reassuring.

There’s really little to recommend itself in terms of general plot or animation or the like, and the art was occasionally shakey. The strength of the show is in the music. This is UFOTable class scoring and direction here, and the OP is wonderfully done by Eufonis. Corti is pretty much exactly what you’d expect though definitely an edge more mature than her Louise and Shana predecessors, though Phoron’s trick of turning his motorcycle into an organ was unintentionally hilarious.

All in all, it really wasn’t a particularly great or compelling episode, but it was relaxing on the brain. I can see it going a lot of ways, but most of them are pretty downhill, especially given the OP containing the crazy saxophone battery. For now though, it was nice to just kick back, turn my brain off, and let Polyphonica take me away to fluffy clouds where I don’t need to bother about thinking.
