White Cat Project #01 — Attack of the Offscreen Blotches

April 6th, 2020

Fantasy is having a rough time of it this season.

Impressions:

The opening and ending make it clear that this is meant to be a kind of Romeo and Juliet thing; star-crossed lovers constantly staring into each other's eyes while one is on the side of darkness and the other light. Not exactly breaking the mold here, but a possibly engaging story… and one that the actual episode itself is seemingly wholly uninterested in telling. The episode only gets so far as establishing that the dude lives in dark land, and the girl lives in light land. They both fight monsters. That's it. That's your whole setting. They don't meet each other at the end. They don't even actually fight any monsters. That all happens just off-screen. Hell, the light land monsters are mostly just dark blobs. So we ain't exactly animating much of anything either.

I'm honestly not even sure what else there is to say about this one. It's so hopelessly, helplessly Generic Fantasy, but without anybody going anywhere or doing anything, and the thing that it seemingly wants to highlight in the relationship between the two characters, is something that just flat out not just doesn't exist in this episode, but shows no sign of existing in the immediate future either. It's not like the episode ends on their meet-cute. Boobs McGee continues staring at the god crystal. Emo Von Angstingstan is hanging in the slums being melancholic with older, grumpier men. Even put together, the two barely have a personality between them. I don't see how they could possibly have any chemistry together. Tune in next week when they might almost fight another dark blob just offscreen.

I kind of licked this one. Was chuuni as fuck, but eh, at least it plays the fantasy thing straight, no gimmicks, no games just some 90s kid wet dream. I like that.
