Wave, Listen to Me! #01 — Pretend Bear Fight Club

April 3rd, 2020

This is clearly what Frasier needed.

Impressions:

Well, it certainly understands what a hook is, but that makes me wonder why it bothers with the second half which drags things down and into the boringly mundane. The first half is pretending that she's fighting a bear while taking listener questions. I think they should have gone whole hog with the surreality since it's already absurd, but it's odd enough to provide a baseline upon which they could escalate or do all kinds of things with.

Except then we drop all that for the origin story in the second half, where the absurdity is gone, and all that remains is listening to the main character aimlessly rant in kind of a Grandpa Simpson "tied an onion to my belt" kind of way. The first half kind of had some chemistry because of the absurd situation contrasted with the mundanity of what she was doing, like if you did Frasier in a fight club. I don't know that it could carry itself on just that, but it certainly might. The second half I'm much more skeptical about and honestly found a bit tedious. But in either case, if I'm talking about the content instead of being distracted by terrible animation, direction, or sound design, then at least Sunrise has done a pretty decent job on the production side.

2 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

  • The Phantom says:

I DARE any sane person to spend 20 mins of this girl shouting and remain sane, this is the most annoying show of the season by a wide margin. Just stop fucking shouting.

I want to like this but feels like annoying rakugo and I dont even like regular rakugo.
