Listeners #02 — All The Most Obvious Twists All At Once

April 10th, 2020

Shocking reveals that are less than shocking

Impressions:

I would love to be a fly on the wall of the writer's room for this one. They spend most of the first half calling out how stupid the resolution of the previous episode was. "O! M! G! She's using the pose that she used to beat the enemies last time!" "Wait, this is stupid and does nothing." "Wait! But maybe you need to yell a cool attack name!" "No, that's also stupid." So you'll never guess how the battle at the end eventually ended! Wait, actually, I'm sure you probably can.

And then there's the Nier knockoffs who are wandering around doing a Ginyu Force impression, and then when it comes time to fight, they literally teleport away and spawn some of the heartless earless to… just kind of crowd uncomfortably around her and spouted exposition about how the heartless earless are former people and the amnesiatic girl is the unawakened lord of destruction. You know, like they always are. Maybe I should be relieved that we got to it so quickly. But when it's a bunch of literal clowns shouting exposition after being fanboyed at, it's hard to swallow, not to mention only makes me assume that it's going to continue trying to one-up itself with these stupid twists instead of developing the characters. Good characters can excel even in a trite story. Terrible characters, however, are an anchor, that will not salvage any number of twists or glowing poses to win every fight.

I like the visuals but the plot itself is really bad and the character are worse, those girls do like androids from Nier Automata, is this some kind of homage?
