If My Idol Made It etc… #01 — It’s Great to Be a Stalker

January 10th, 2020

I don't think this show gives the right message.

Impressions:

My first thought was "What a weird show." It took me a little bit to be able to rectify how it portrayed every single idol fan as being some kind of gross social malcontent, at least aside from the protagonist whose great sins are being really awkward and dressing like she's a gopnitsa without doing the Slav squat. The message there is a bit disquieting. Yeah, all those other fans are weird, strange, and gross, but not you. You just need a little confidence and to put on nice clothes, but you don't actually even need that. You shared a glance with the obect of your adoration and she was completely smitten with you.

It's romanticized stalker fanfiction, but we're supposed to take it as parody because… I'm not sure why, to be honest. There are a few overdramatized reaction faces here and there, mostly tucked towards the end, but most it is just the lead being awkward. Japan, you have enough shows about teenagers being awkward and uncomfortable dealing with literally goddamned everything. There's already three this season alone about how awkward they are talking with people in the same club as them, and astronomy, rugby, and animation are much more tolerable than jerking off over idol stuff for the billionth time.
