Wasteful Days of High School Girls #01 — Stream of Lack of Consciousness

July 5th, 2019

I miss quiet.

I was woken up at around 530am this morning by a baby screaming in someone else's house after fireworks kept me up until around 1am, on what should have been a day off to sleep in. I'm not in the best of moods to be watching five premieres, but let's get this train running. I suspect I'm going to need a nap as soon as my body decides to let me have one.

Impressions:

After a nearly two minute long montage introduction of girls shuffling around, I was ready for a nap. Woe betide me though, because that's when the stream of consciousness torrent began and was what the show would do for the remaining twenty minutes. A never ceasing dull buzz punctuated occasionally by someone yelling, usually a summary of the last thing said in the conversation. I am insulting you. She is insulting me! They are calling me something insulting. Being called something insulting is insulting! She keeps using the phrase "what an interesting woman." She used the phrase "what an interesting woman" again! What is going on here? These are not jokes.

I have little enough tolerance for the wall of recited text format when the direction is spiced up as in Shinbo shows, or when the characters are all motormouthed hyperactive lunatics, but this is trying to be normal, so the budget is usually pretty low (although there are some out-of-place moments of over-animation) and it steers far clear from anything too wacky. The taciturn girl does a couple kind of off-beat things, but that's maybe ten seconds of the episode, and I suspect she only does them at all because somebody on the writing team understands that trying to make banality a joke is a doomed prospect.
