How Heavy Are Your Dumbbells? #01 — Distressed and Horny

A description of the two faces that will be comprising your punchlines here.

Impressions:

I'm going to start with the highlight of the episode, which was the ED, and not because it signaled that the episode was at its end. The ED is a pretty transparent homage/ripoff of the Village People's Macho Man, and is the kind of silly mocking celebration of the whole bodybuilding thing that the rest of the episode badly lacked. What the episode did have was faces. Specifically, it had two faces. Exactly two faces. Distressed, and horny. Those were parceled out to the two girls. Occasionally, the straight man got to look horny, but the other one never got to look distressed. That's how you can tell who was the main protagonist bringing in the big paychecks. Depth of character.

My thoughts always go back to GA Art Design Class as my personal gold standard for "random plotless club show about X," and what it did right that this fails at is having a genuine passion for X. The characters in GA were knowledgable and enthusiastic about art. They were great big balls of weird, infectious energy, whether they were teaching the audience about acryllics or just bouncing off the walls. Here, the audience-insert straight man spends the whole thing aghast at bodybuilders, and the other one is framed as a deviant crazy-person. The dopey kind of celebration of it in the ED is in stark contrast to the rest of the episode. Which isn't to say thay bodybuilders aren't kind of weird, but so is art. And cooking. And everything. It does its two little sexualized educational bits, but spends most of its time pointing and laughing at how weird and gross those people are, which puts me off the whole thing, even before trying to sell two girls making the same two faces as the comedy to carry everything.
