Mix #01 — Scant Expectations

*gasp* He knows how to throw a ball!

Impressions:

We move from Jump shows to club non-drama dramas in this season's Saturday ordeal of futility. First, baseball, then harps, each more unanimated than the last. This began with two minutes of establishing shot stills of a baseball game and the declaration that this would be a show about baseball, followed soon after by close to a minute timeout of establishing shot stills, and then we reach the current day and our protagonists… whereupon the pause button is hit and the narrator jumps in to explain "This is the first protagonist of this show," and close on its heels, "This is the other protagonist of the show." That's not snark. Those are direct quotes from the episode. It's especially bizarre because the narrator seemingly only exists for the opening bit and whenever a new character appears, no matter how inconsequential they may be to the episode. It's important that we specify the middle-aged lady serving children breakfast in their home is their mother, because she has a whole three seconds of screen time and people might be confused if it wasn't explicitly spelled out.

I hesitate to say that was the high point of the episode, but it is about where I mentally checked out because the rest passed in a low end sports drama haze, not helped by the retro art style and low budget giving it all the visual zeal of dry tofu. Baseball team is bad. But look, the protagonist throws a few good pitches and everyone gasps in awe. Aaaand that's it for try-outs. And the episode. Didn't even strike a dude out or anything. Just awed the peanut gallery after the peanut gallery spent the last five minutes explaining how awful they are. Even for a sports show, that feels particularly underwhelming.
