Release the Spyce #08 — Writing by Madlib

Snake wizard grandpa viking girl pirate flamethrower beach montage.

Impressions:

I suppose at least pure chaos is, broadly speaking, more interesting than doing nothing at all, but I'd be very curious to see the process that ended up with a script involving a little girl viking protecting a fortress that has a ginormous flamethrower and is full of modern pirates in service of a snake wizard. I also really liked how they detected them coming, even shot off the flame cannon at them, and then I guess everyone just forgot because the guards were just hanging around; no alarms going off or anything. Oh, and have I mentioned that the Theresa/Hatsume thing was relegated to a weird bookend C plot this week, just dangling off the front and back of the episode with literally no relation whatsoever to what was going on? I wouldn't say that the writing's taken a turn for the nonsensical, but as we careen towards an ending, it's becoming more and more obvious that the wheels were never on in the first place, and were probably made of cheese.

The viking part was easily the weirdest thing, not the least of which was because they tried to really half-ass in Goemon having problems self-drugging herself because of PTSD from last week's drugfest. That entire… arc, I guess you could call it… was about 15 seconds of flashbacks across two characters and two conversations total. You'd think they'd be doing more with it if they were going to introduce a new character with a particularly odd gimmick, but second for second, I think there was more time spent on delivering head trauma to snakes than that B plot got. I'm not sure I could tell you what the A plot was supposed to be though either. Hanzo got pissy at Momo because I guess she was being reckless? Don't really buy it. It's not like she disobeyed orders or did something stupidly reckless like fighting an entire mafia family/pirate crew while dodging a hail of automated gunfire.

5 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

Well, the Show gave out their Nails for their own Coffin very early out. Since they revealed that some Traitor are among them and still is

    • kenuran says:

The longer they drag out the traitor angle, the more likely it will end up being something that will just get hand-waived into being not really big deal to begin with.

For example – “I was actually just being a secret double-agent to get the bad guys to end up giving us good guys exactly what we need to beat them” All in one scene

That’s the kind of writing this show has lead me to expect.

They’ll probably milk it for at least one episode, but I’d still wager two. Gotta angst over how much FRIENDSHIP and FEELINGS they have, after all.

Or may be the “traitor” is just one of the three Little animals.

  • Neclord X says:

Ok, this episode was dumb, but I Will be honest. Viking ninja with giant axes and old master kung fu snake fist is the kind of dumb I can dig in with pleasure.
