Tsukumogami Rental #01 — Rats in the Brothel

His sister's a bit thirsty for him, isn't she?

Impressions:

Someone needs to have a word with whoever was working on the music in this show, because I think they weren't provided anywhere near enough direction. Although considering how nonexistent the animation is for the most part, I get the feeling that a lot of people weren't given much of anything. The music is especially constantly a little bit off though. The OP especially, but the denouement tune too was full of dramatic violins wailing mournfully away. And then the light jazz kicks in. That was the most distinctive thing about the entire episode honestly.

This kind of strikes me as a budget Hamtaro. Ostensibly, you've got your adults running the place and a bunch of small, semi-magical critters with the mental acuity of a sea cucumber running around in the walls of the place having wacky adventures. However, the 'wacky adventure' portion lasts like thirty seconds and the rest of it is sitting around the house explaining things they all already know to each other. And yet, the writing and 'mystery solving' here still compares favorably to shows like that Holmes thing this season, so I feel like I shouldn't be too harsh on it for that, but getting compared to Hamtaro and coming up short isn't praise either.

The premise of this show makes it seem that it should be fun, interesting and different, but somehow it turns out to be dull and slightly annoying. There was nothing terribly wrong, but nothing very right either. As you implied, it was sort of an episode of Hamtaro playing Detective Conan.
