Music Girls #01 — Should’ve Stuck With the Monsters

July 6th, 2018

What a painful way to end things. And I mean both the OP and the tonedeaf singing.

Impressions:

You know, I could get behind an idol show if they secretly set fires on the side, or were a band of rapacious pirates, or any number of things. And being on the cutting edge of knowing about the bait and switch for five minutes before the rest of the internet will make it all worth it. The closest this gets is that the main character is such a dumb foreign bimbo that she thinks mascot characters are idols, which is the only joke of the episode, lest you think this might be trying to carry itself on humor. But she's so starstruck when she sees real idols that it instantly becomes her new everything. I suppose the secondary twist is that she's tone deaf, but since when has being a terrible singer ever stopped anybody from being a pop star?

It's another sloppy blowjob to the idol industry, through and through, right down to the creepily rotoscoped dance sequences. Idols are the perfectest perfection ever perfected, the pinnacle of grace, beauty, hardworking, friendship blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. I'd rather have seen something based on Japan's wide array of weird mascot characters, especially if they managed to get Domo-kun to bite the head off a member of AKB48.

Idol shows are unpleasant enough with the off-putting different art style dance sequences already, now add the positively dreadful deen animation department to the mix.

The OVA had its moments because it focused on the too dumb to live MC, but giving the entire troupe focus will probably be ruinous.

This whole idol business is just outright creepy.

Sanrio managed to put out a pretty good one in Aggretsuko on Netflix.

The characters in these screenshots are almost indistinguishable from Love Live characters… which I guess could also double as commentary foe the idol industry.

LocoDol also got some millage out of the mascot character thing.
