Grand Blue #01 — Suspended for Hazing

July 13th, 2018

No open carry laws in Japan, I guess.

Impressions:

There are a few moments here and there where it lets dudes being silly dudes be the joke and it's not half bad. However, they're buried under a veritable avalanche of ridiculous faces and screaming. You can make jokes without someone screaming or making a stupid face, Japan. There's nothing wrong with a little bit of understatement. At the very least, can we take it down a notch? It could stand a bit more variety in its characters too. Most of them that don't have boobs bleed together, and then they introduce a blond clone of the main character except his gimmick is that he's ostensibly an otaku instead of the females' cousin. Not helping things.

Like I said though, it does have its moments here and there, and probably being the seventh piece of Japanese media in a day means that it's starting at a severe disadvantage as far as my patience for being screamed at goes. Some of the attempted bits, especially the "give me your clothes" thing were also pretty tortuous, especially after being repeated at least three or four times. I think it would definitely benefit from having much more of a narrative, specifically something that the main character(s) actually want other than the very bland and generic plea for normalcy. I don't feel like I'm asking the moon here either. The better Western comedies fit in two, even three mini-arcs per episode, helping round characters out and provide a vehicle for them to shine, which this episode lacked. Three months of Japanese dude Constantly Shouting His Inability to Fight Peer Pressure feels like it'd be a bit much.
