Death March to Yada Yada #01 — …But With Menus!

January 11th, 2018

And especially bad CGI.

Impressions:

And we come to our second show of the day about a hapless imbecile who can't find two braincells to rub together magically transported to another world after spending a massive chunk of the episode being pathetic. Perhaps it deserves some credit for not having a constant stream of narration… for a time. It's just watching the banality of office work. But then he arrives in Magicland and it kicks into overdrive. In fact, basically the entire rest of the episode from that point forward is just him narrating that he's now in a game. But don't worry, this sets itself apart from the seventeen hundred thousand other "trapped in a fantasy game" things by having actual pop ups and menus that he browses to use his abilities or change the very nature of the world, like an actual game. In addition to him narrating them. So it's only like the other fourteen hundred thousand of its ilk.

It's a bold strategy to advertise itself as a harem show in its OP, ED, and all promotional material, but instead have the first episode have only Chuck talking to Wilson. Except Wilson exists only in his head. And instead of struggling to survive, he cowers in fear and is rewarded with godlike powers. Which he then uses strictly for narration. So I guess we're kind of going more for the power fantasy thing here rather than the power fantasy WITH objectification thing? Or maybe just adding "cowering" to SAO's godawful starting template. Except I don't know how much of that you can even claim when, again, his crowning moment of triumph was cowering and bawling to the internal narration about how he was about to die. But at least the CGI lizards and CGI rocks sure were poorly modeled and animated. Great job, guys.

  • The Phantom says:

Even the MC VA sounds awfully similar to that idiot with a Cellphone in another world.

  • residentgrigo says:

Wow. The CG is as bad as on Berserk 2016/17. Or the first 2 films.

  • Anonymous says:

This was the second show yesterday that almost put me to sleep. Jesús, I swear, did Japanese become alergic to progression?

  • Fluffums says:

The objectification should start episode 2 and go full-force from there to the end.
