Fate/Apocrypha #13 — Desperate Depths of Despairing Despair

October 2nd, 2017

Oh god yes, monologue after monologue after monologue.

Impressions:

You'd think they'd at least be able to put together a visually impressive episode after taking a week off, but apparently not. Even for this show, this was one of the talkier episodes. Perhaps not the most uneventful, but that's a pretty low bar to clear. It can basically be boiled down to the part where Shirou blathers endlessly, and the part where Sieg blathers endlessly. The former had at least a little bit of pretending there would be a fight until Saber showed up to one-shot everything into a cloud of smoke, letting everybody futz away. Didn't stop that side's entire first half being one long monologue, and just about as exciting as you could expect a monologue to be.

The latter was more along the lines of torture and death porn. Probably the stronger of the two, but one can only listen to so many rants about the depths of despair and I reached my limit for it in Japanese animation at around a dozen. In January. But we have scenery to chew, so let's milk that scene for all it's worth and then some while Jesus and Girl-Boy Jesus are stuck there in unending anguish, too anguished to do anything but anguish. After that, it's time to watch someone else die, before the big declaration that the time has come to stand up and fight. But for a real reason this time. Maybe that's where we should've begun, eh?

Do you know what this episode needed? A flashback!

I liked the part where Shirou blabbered endlessly because he’s at least being painted as somebody who you want to see get his butt kicked as opposed to “well this guy is the bad guy and he has an evil laugh so you are supposed to want him to get his butt kicked”
