Symphogear AXZ #12 — “Shoot Her in the Giant Ass”

September 23rd, 2017

The highlight of the godawful episode.

Fate/Apoc aired a recap clips show this week, and screw that noise. Also, I'll be out of town next weekend. If I cover anything, it'll be very delayed until the evening. More likely I'll just play catch-up on Monday.

Impressions:

Even for this season, this episode was some hot steaming crap in a leaky dixie cup. They spend a third of it just staring at the cocoon, then it emerges and does nothing but shoot a couple lasers. They try to restrain it, fail, but someone, somewhere, was talking about how it's Hibiki's birthday, so that snaps her out of it completely. Except also they called in a nuclear strike, so the ghosts of dead antagonists come back to life just long enough to stop that. Whereupon Arm-boy's master plan finally takes effect and he's able to put all the GOD POWER into his arm, only to immediately be one-shot… again.

So if you're adding up, that's about a third of the episode on literally nothing, a third of the episode on pissing on about her birthday, which is what saves the day, and a third of the episode on nonsense crisis resolved by nonsense deus ex machina, occasionally in less than 30 second spans. This franchise needs to be done. It's clear at this point that the well is dry and nobody involved with it is even pretending to try.

8 Shouts From the Peanut Gallery

It makes you wonder, what will they do for the fifth season that it’s already greenlit?

    • Aroduc says:

Probably the same thing as they did this season; jack goddamned squat.

I don’t even get it. There’s no character arc for anybody. There’s no story arc. Nothing was ever particularly at stake. The super ultimate invincible thing’s only vulnerability was literally the first thing they threw at it. What the hell was even the point of this season?

  • Opulent Rag says:

Maybe it was all leading up to giant ultra-girl ass? It’s anime, that sounds like something they’d have a season long arc towards.
